Browns vs Jets NFL Week 5 Preview
The Browns have won three consecutive games while also covering the number in each outing as underdogs. Despite their best winning streak in recent memory and the extended rest they will enjoy for their travels to New York, they are due for some regression.
Head coach Todd Monken has managed Deshaun Watson in a manner that maximizes the team’s win condition, but sooner or later, the lack of efficiency in the downfield passing game will catch up with this offense. Watson has completed 69% of his passes this season, but his average depth of target ranks 24th at 6.3 yards.
Even as Monken has asked very little of his quarterback in terms of making difficult throws, Watson still ranks 21st in completion percentage over expectation at -2.6% — sandwiched between the likes of Cam Ward and Jalen Hurts.
The Browns defense has been generating pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season to the tune of 40.4%. They are one of just six teams above the 40% mark through four games.
Cleveland has ceded numerous explosive plays due to its high man coverage rate, which is a bit surprising given that Denzel Ward has graded as the top coverage corner in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus.
The defensive coaching staff for Cleveland has opted to forego prioritizing matchups in alignment. Ward has had the chance to face two top-flight receivers in Tetairoa McMillan and DK Metcalf, yet has shadowed them in coverage at a rate of 48% and 25%, respectively, during those two games.
The Browns rank 27th in yards per carry and teams have created explosive rushes against them at a 15% clip – the highest rate in the NFL.
Cleveland will also be without defensive lineman Mason Graham, a key piece in its front seven. In 2025, when Graham was out of the lineup, the Browns allowed 5.5 yards per carry.
The quarterback leading the NFL in completion percentage over expectation (CPOE)? None other than the Jets’ Geno Smith.
Smith attempted just 15 passes a week ago in Chicago as his offense was on the field for just 32 snaps, an outlier to say the least. On paper, it would seem this matchup with the Cleveland defense will present an even more difficult challenge, but the Jets actually match up quite well with the Browns’ defensive style of play.
No quarterback has played better under pressure this season than Smith, who has a 117.2 passer rating against pressure, averaging 9.5 yards per pass attempt.
Smith has taken 12 sacks, but Garrett Wilson is the type of receiver who can win quickly in his route to allow Smith to get the ball to him quickly. This is especially important because Cleveland has played man coverage at an extremely high rate during its three-game winning streak, mostly using Cover 1 (one high safety).
Wilson has excelled versus man coverage this season, averaging 3.9 yards per route run while commanding a 38% target share. Smith also calls the play-action and should have the benefit of an effective running game behind him.
Browns vs Jets Prediction, Betting Analysis
New York is positioned for a bounce-back performance today at home.
The Jets should be able to stay ahead of the sticks on early downs by running the football successfully, which will help negate some of the pass rush of Cleveland whenever Geno Smith and company do find themselves in 3rd-and-medium circumstances.
The Browns are fortunate to boast a 3-1 record at this point considering they have led for just 27% of their offensive snaps.
This game may be close through three quarters, but New York should sustain more drives and have more scoring opportunities in totality.
I am backing the Jets as favorites in this favorable spot up to -2.5
Pick: Jets -1.5; bet to -2.5
