Clubs sliding down the Premier League table will go at it Saturday when Newcastle United hosts Southampton in St. James' Park.
The Magpies, who have fallen to 16th place and found themselves creeping closer to the relegation zone, are coming off a 2-1 setback against Crystal Palace last time out.
On the other side, the Saints would rather forget what happened midweek against Manchester United. Two red cards, including one to Alex Jankewitz in the second minute, led to a 9-0 shellacking at the Red Devils' hands.
Needless to say, both sides are looking for something positive in this fixture.
Newcastle
Manager Steve Bruce and the Magpies continue to creep their way into the drop-zone chatter, with the latest setback adding more fuel to the fire.
Newcastle, which has just one win in its last 13 matches across all competitions, has also lost seven of its last eight contests. The lone bright spot came three back via a surprise 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park.
And those were a much-needed three points, considering the Magpies are just eight clear of 18th-place Fulham in the bottom three of the table.
Statistically, Newcastle continues to be one of the league's worst — both offensively and defensively — in the advanced metrics.
The Magpies sit on a paltry 21.3 expected goals and 30.8 expected goals against, resulting in a brutal -9.5 xGDiff and -0.43 xGDiff/90 minutes.
Southampton
It goes without saying the Saints simply want to forget about the utter embarrassment that went down at Old Trafford.
The rout was just the latest in Southampton's decline in England's top flight. The Saints have now lost four league fixtures on the bounce, getting shut out in three of those affairs.
When comparing stats with Newcastle, Southampton's numbers are pretty much a wash with its counterpart.
The Magpies are on 20.8 expected goals and stellar 28.2 expected goals against that result in a decent -7.4 xGDiff and -0.35 for xGDiff/90 minutes. Bottom line, both clubs boast numbers that simply won't cut.
Betting Analysis & Picks
Talk about a tough match to handicap. You have two extremely out-of-form outfits that simply can't get anything done on the pitch.
However, if you're looking for the lesser of two evils, the right side is Newcastle in my opinion. That win over Everton proved that as bad as this club has been, it can still throw in a decent effort on occasion. That said, I am will back the Magpies via a Draw No Bet wager at plus money.
I will also play the total to go over the number as well. Three points are an absolute must for Newcastle and Southampton, so I don't expect either to sit back and let the other dictate the show.
Throw in the fact the total has reached three goals or more in Newcastle's last three home league tilts and the last five games against Southampton at St. James' Park across all competitions, and I like my chances with this wager.
