It's been two years since Daniil Medvedev last won an ATP Tour title. Those were the days he still seemed like the guy to beat.
He recently talked about some of his struggles, but even though his No. 11 ranking and latest results leave them outside the leading contenders, he remains a formidable opponent.
His clay season performances set a positive trend, although still far from the heydays of the former World No. 1. He crashed out in the Round of 16 in Monte-Carlo and Rome, with a quarterfinals appearance in Madrid.
Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti were the rivals who beat him, all of them ranked above, so it's understandable and a testament to his downgrade. He expects to make a comeback and move up again, but the Russian is in a different group now.
Nevertheless, his first rival in Paris, Cameron Norrie, is further down the ladder. Medvedev even has an unblemished record against him: 4-0 is the head-to-head balance.
All of them were decided in two sets, and the most recent one, this month in Rome, provides the key to this match. It was the most lopsided victory, 6-4 and 6-2, and the only one in clay, a surface that favors Medvedev and has never been a favorite of Norrie.

Mackenzie McDonald and Novak Djokovic have never previously played, but this should be a cruise control type of victory for the veteran.
While Djokovic has struggled with his form during this clay-court season (lost his opening-round matches in Madrid and Rome), he turned the corner in Geneva, winning the title against Hubert Hurkacz in three sets.
