With a new coach and a more aggressive approach, Tiafoe hopes this 2026 season is a marked improvement upon the last one.

The American, who will turn 28 years old on Tuesday, parted ways with former coach David Witt and hired Mark Kovacs, a physiologist and biomechanics researcher, to help him mold his game.

His first obstacle this year was another player trying to regain his best level, Daniil Medvedev, who eliminated him after two sets in the Round of 16 at the ATP 250 in Brisbane.

Tiafoe's best performance at the Australian Open is far removed: a quarterfinal appearance in 2019. To at least match it, he would have to defeat Alex de Minaur in a possible third-round match. If he does, Tiafoe could eventually meet Carlos Alcaraz in the same quarter of the draw.

For now, he will just focus on getting the better of the much less experienced Comesana, avoiding any surprises.

Although Comesana is a clay specialist, his game has improved on every surface since his 2024 ATP debut, almost two years ago to the date.

The Argentinian has managed to upset a few great players in his career, such as Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev, so Tiafoe is not out of his reach in this second round.

Comesana defeated Patrick Kypson in his first match, but had to go to four sets: 6-2, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3. He recorded 20 aces but also had five double faults, which he will need to cut down when facing tougher rivals like Tiafoe.

He's a baseliner who likes to go often to the net, and will rely on his ability to return service to force Tiafoe to beat him on longer rallies. Comesana will look to make it past the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
