Jasmine Paolini made the French Open final last year, and considering Iga Swiatek's three-year winning streak at Roland Garros, that feat should be a trophy in itself.

The Italian won the WTA 500 Rome before coming to Paris and has had a great start despite dropping a set in her first match against Yue Yuan. After that, Paolini won her next two matches in straight sets, defeating Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3, 6-3 and Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-4, 6-1.

However, it is safe to say Paolini has not faced stiff competition at Roland Garros until now.

Elina Svitolina is the player with the most wins on clay this year after playing four tournaments, including a title in Rouen, a semifinal (Madrid), and a quarterfinal appearance (Rome).

She has defeated every opponent in Paris in just two sets but labored over the last two matches against Anna Bondar and Bernarda Pera, having to win seven games in every set (three tiebreaks and one 7-5) to advance.

The Ukrainian won the only match in her head-to-head with Paolini when they met this year in the third round of the Australian Open. The Italian took the first set 6-2, but Svitolina rallied back to win the next two 6-4, 6-0.

Paolini is a great returning player, so she can make her rival sweat for every point. She will probably need that now since Svitolina has won 75.1% of games served this year.

Paolini is the slight favorite, but in the WTA tour — and particularly the Grand Slams — the surprises never stop coming.

It's tempting to back the underdog here, although no cracks in Paolini's game are visible enough to go for it confidently.

The best bet should be on a lengthy match.

Aryna Sabalenka is still the player to beat in this tournament.

The World No. 1 won in Madrid, made it to the final in Stuttgart, and confirmed in Paris this week how serious her bid is to finally add Roland Garros to her resume as her fourth Grand Slam title.

Sabalenka has won all three of her matches in straight sets without losing more than three games in any set. However, her path to glory might have a few obstacles since her side of the bracket is loaded.

Qinwen Zheng, last year's Olympic Gold medalist on this same Parisian clay, could be her rival in the quarterfinals. On top of that, Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, or Jasmine Paolini would wait for her in the semifinals.

However, if you think the toughest rival is always the current one, you might be right with Amanda Anisimova and her surprising record against Sabalenka.

At 23 years old, the American dominates 5-2 in the head-to-head. Anisimova defeated Sabalenka the first four times they met, first on a hard court and then three times on clay, only to lose twice in a row later and then win the last match in 2024 in Toronto.

Anisimova is great at the net and has a very good return game. She made the semifinals of the French Open in 2019 when she was only 17 years old. This week, she has also won all matches in two sets and is probably one of the last players Sabalenka wanted to face here.

Nevertheless, Sabalenka should prevail.

Pick: Sabalenka Moneyline | Over 19.5 (+120 via DraftKings)
