Sanderson Farms Championship Preview

The PGA Tour heads to Jackson, Mississippi for the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship at The Country Club of Jackson after Team Europe defeated Team USA at the Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy this past weekend.

The 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship is the second of seven events in the new-look FedExCup Fall. Sahith Theegala captured his first career PGA Tour victory at the Fortinet Championship in the first event of the FedExCup Fall a few weeks ago in Napa.

While Theegala isn't in the field this week, another young stud on the PGA Tour who is looking for his first PGA Tour win is the outright favorite: Ludvig Aberg. Aberg is fresh off of a 2-2-0 week at the Ryder Cup as he was the only player in the competition who had never teed it up at a major championship. The Swede is also the only Ryder Cup competitor in the field this week after Nicolai Højgaard withdrew from the Sanderson Farms Championship on Sunday.

The 22-year-old makes the trip across the Atlantic Ocean after opening as the outright betting favorite at +1200 on bet365 while now sitting at +1300. This is the Texas Tech Red Raider's eighth PGA Tour start since turning professional over the summer.

Since he last played in a PGA Tour event (the Wyndham Championship), Aberg has played in three DP World Tour events and finished in the top 10 of all three, including a win at the Omega European Masters.

Mackenzie Hughes also returns to defend his title after winning the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship in a playoff over Sepp Straka at -17. The Canadian is looking to become the first repeat winner of the Sanderson Farms Championship since Dwight Nevil went back-to-back in 1973-74. He enters at 50/1 to repeat this week.

Stephan Jaeger and Eric Cole are the only two other golfers who opened with odds of 20/1 or shorter on the board at bet365. Jaeger has since shortened to +2000 while Cole has drifted to +2200.

While Jaeger does not have a finish inside the top eight on the PGA Tour this season, he has consistently played strong golf as he has made 13 consecutive cuts. Per Datagolf, Jaeger has gained strokes on approach in each of his last eight tracked tournaments while also gaining strokes in six of his last seven starts off the tee and in seven of his last eight starts around the green.

Cole enters off of his fourth top-six finish of the year after a sole fourth at the Fortinet Championship. While Cole is below the PGA Tour average in both driving accuracy and driving distance, he has excelled on approach as he has gained strokes on approach in 25 of his last 28 starts on Tour, including nine straight starts.

Course Preview

The Country Club of Jackson is a 7,461-yard par-72 with four par-5s, four par-3s and 10 par-4s.

This week, players should expect to be greeted by fast Bermudagrass greens. With smaller Donald Ross greens, there will be a premium on strong approach play. Water is in play on five holes, and there are seven water hazards and 56 total bunkers on the course.

The Country Club of Jackson also has wide fairways, so bombers off the tee should have an advantage built into this long course with four par-5s, three of which under 600 yards, and the drivable par-4 15th hole.

Relative to the PGA Tour average, there are more wedge shots hit on approach at The Country Club of Jackson from 100-150 yards along with more long approaches into the par-5s from over 250 yards.

Historically, Strokes Gained: Approach and Strokes Gained: Putting have had the highest correlation with Strokes Gained: Total in Jackson. Driving Distance is slightly more correlated with Strokes Gained: Total while Driving Accuracy is slightly less correlated with Strokes Gained: Total at The Country Club of Jackson when compared to an average PGA Tour course.

Sanderson Farms Championship Past Winners

Mackenzie Hughes, Cameron Champ, Ryan Armour, Cody Gribble, Peter Malnati and Scott Stallings are among past winners in the field for this week's Sanderson Farms Championship.
