2024 Sony Open in Hawaii Preview

The PGA Tour heads to Honolulu for the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club after Chris Kirk won the season-opening event on Sunday as he shot a final-round 65 to win The Sentry by one shot at 29-under par.

As of Tuesday, Kirk remains in the field this week, and he has excelled at Waialae throughout his career. In 13 career starts at the Sony Open in Hawaii, the Georgia Bulldog has four top-five finishes, including two a solo third last year and a T2 in 2021. Kirk opened at +3300 odds to win outright on Monday morning at bet365 and now is +2700 as of Wednesday morning.

Defending Sony Open in Hawaii champion Si Woo Kim is in the field this week to defend his title, and he is fresh off of finishing T25 at The Sentry. Kim led the Sony Open in Hawaii in Strokes Gained: Approach last season and chipped in for a clutch birdie on the par-3 17th hole in the final round as he held off Hayden Buckley by one shot to capture his fourth PGA Tour victory.

As of open at bet365 on Monday morning, Kim was +4000 to defend his title this week, but he has since moved to +3800. He has made five of six cuts at the Sony Open in Hawaii, including a solo fourth finish in 2016 in addition to his win in 2023. He has gained strokes off the tee and around the greens in all six of his starts at Waialae.

Ludvig Aberg will also jump from Maui to Honolulu this week as he looks to bounce back after a disappointing week at The Sentry where he finished in a tie for 47th (out of 59 golfers). Aberg shot the worst round of his short career on the PGA Tour on Saturday with a 77 in windy conditions at Kapalua, but he followed that up with an impressive 63 (-10) on Sunday.

The Swede won his first PGA Tour event two starts ago at The RSM Classic in November and had finished in the top 14 in eight consecutive worldwide starts prior to this past weekend. Aberg opened as the outright betting favorite at +1200 to win the Sony Open in Hawaii on Monday morning and has drifted to +1700 on Wednesday morning.

Like Aberg, Tyrrell Hatton will also make his Sony Open in Hawaii debut this week. He enters after a strong T14 finish at The Sentry which was highlighted by a 62 on Friday, although Hatton wasn't pleased with his score in his post-round interview.

While the fiery Englishman ranked seventh in Strokes Gained (SG): Total last season on the PGA Tour, he did not win a tournament, but he has a great chance to capture his second PGA Tour victory this week as he has +1900 outright odds as of Wednesday morning at bet365.

Like Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick is another Englishman making his tournament debut at the Sony Open in Hawaii this week. Fitzpatrick shot four rounds in the 60s at The Sentry as he finished T14 for the week despite finishing 52nd out of 59 players in SG: Approach.

The 2022 U.S. Open champion opened at +1400 odds to win this week in Honolulu as he and Hatton are tied for the second-shortest outright odds at +1900 as of Wednesday morning.

Will Zalatoris will make his season debut this week following back surgery that has kept him out of official PGA Tour competition since the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in March. The Wake Forest product will make his first start at Waialae this week as he opened with +3500 odds to win at bet365 before drifting to +5500 as of Wednesday morning.

Brian Harman, the reigning Champion Golfer of the Year after winning the 2023 Open Championship is tied with Russell Henley with the fourth-shortest odds at +2200 on bet3655 as of Wednesday morning. Harman rolls into Oahu off of a tie for eighth at The Sentry and will make his 13th start at the Sony Open this week (with his best finish being a T4 in 2018.

Henley had a rough start to the season at The Sentry with a T52, but he has a strong history at the Sony Open with a win at Waialae in 2013 and a solo second in 2022. This will be the Georgia Bulldog's 12th start at the Sony Open this week.

2024 Sony Open in Hawaii Course Preview

Waialae Country Club is a par-70 that measures 7,044 yards with 12 par-4s, four par-3s and only two par-5s on Bermudagrass.

Whereas last week's PGA Tour event at Kapalua featured some of the widest and most open fairways on the PGA Tour, Waialae features tree-lined fairways and sharp doglegs that minimize distance off the tee.

As a result of there being only two par-5s — both should be reachable for the entire field at just 505 and 551 yards — and only two lengthy par-4s over 475 yards, Driving Accuracy has historically been more highly correlated with Strokes Gained (SG): Total than Driving Distance here.

Golfers will need to excel with their short irons once they find the fairways as roughly 65% of approach shots at Waialae over the last three Sony Opens have come from between 125 and 200 yards.

SG: Approach and SG: Putting have had the highest correlation with SG: Total among the SG metrics, while SG: Around the Green has had the lowest correlation with SG: Total.
