Sobel: Five More Players To Watch at This Week’s Corales Puntacana Tournament

Last week was kind of a big week. (And no, that’s not a Bryson DeChambeau joke.) With the U.S. Open taking place amidst a packed sports schedule, there was enough going on that we didn’t need to look ahead too much.

But of course, in golf, we always have to look ahead. The minute one tournament ends, the next tournament week begins, hot on its heels.

And so, not long after I wrote my U.S. Open review column, I wrote my Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship column.

I listed a bunch of players whom I believe should have solid performances – Sam Burns, Will Zalatoris and Emiliano Grillo among the favorites; Peter Uihlein, Akshay Bhatia and Rob Oppenheim from the lower tier.

A few days later, I stand by those plays. But like any smart investor, I’m constantly researching and reviewing and keeping an open mind about other potential options.

All of which is my way of saying that, in one of the weakest fields of the year, there are a handful of other players who didn’t find their way onto my first list that I now like. I track all of my plays in the Action Network app and – to be completely honest – didn’t want anyone to see those plays and wonder why some of them weren’t mentioned in the preview. I want full transparency here.

With that in mind, here are five more names that I like:

Pat Perez (+2800)

Yes, Tindall tipped this one, too, but I’ve got another source: I host a weekly golf betting and fantasy show on the SiriusXM PGA Tour channel with Michael Collins; Collins also hosts a show with Perez. When he tells me Perez is about to play some good golf, I know where he’s getting that info.

Sepp Straka (+4000)

At his price, maybe my (new) favorite play on the board. He owns a solid track record on long courses, has some history in tropical locales and opened the season with a T-14 two weeks ago.

Thomas Detry (+4500)

He was one of my favorite sleeper plays at Winged Foot – and he cruising until an ugly final round. I loved this analysis piece from Dave Tindall on how Detry used to play this course every day on vacation.

Brice Garnett (+7000)

The 2018 champion of this event, Garnett also owns a strong record in these tropical events. Fun fact: During a TV interview with him, I once referred to Brice as “Big Ticket” – you know, like Kevin? – and, well, it hasn’t stuck like I’d hoped it would.

Nate Lashley (+17500)

Like Garnett, Lashley owns a win here, though it came when this was still a Korn Ferry event. He was all-world on PGA Tour Latinoamerica back in 2016, so it stands to reason that this venue should fit his eye.
