Diamondbacks vs Orioles Preview
I've always been higher on Ryne Nelson than the market—going on about four years now—but I am on the over here, so that should say something.
This is a weather-oriented over. Ryne Nelson is confirmed as the starting pitcher for Arizona, and it is very likely than Dean Kramer will start for the Orioles.
As a result, my projection would be around 9.5 runs, not only because of the quality of the starting pitchers—both Kremer and Nelson project as below-average starters by the numbers, even though I'm a little bit higher on Nelson—but the weather is also pointing to the over.
We have the wind blowing out in Baltimore today, straight to center or left-center field, which should boost the run environment for this matchup.
Diamondbacks vs Orioles Picks
Both starting pitchers project as below average. There are really only a few arms combined between these two bullpens that project as above-average relievers: Ryan Helsley and Yennier Cano for the Orioles, and Jonathan Loaisiga for the Diamondbacks.
With the Diamondbacks in particular, their bullpen has days where it’s going to be absolutely disastrous. We saw it near the end of last season after the injuries they ran into; their bullpen quality was just pitiful in August and September.
On days where their key relievers are overworked or ineffective, they're going to get blown up. I think this could be one of those spots, especially with the wind situation.
Also, both teams are presumably in their better split. Arizona actually projects as a better offense against lefties, but they still project well here with Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll.
The Orioles project better against righties than lefties. Hopefully, at some point, Pete Alonso starts hitting some more dingers, which would definitely help get this total over.
I'm happy to take over 8.5 and I’d play it up to 9.
