Brewers vs Rays MLB Betting Preview

Milwaukee Brewers Betting Preview

The Brewers have done all the heavy lifting in this series already, coming back from a four-run deficit in Game 2 and dominating the Rays in their first game in Tampa. Now, it's time for Pat Murphy to take the profits from Monday night and reinvest them on Tuesday.

Milwaukee has yet to announce a starting pitcher, and may wait until just before gametime to do so, because the pitching staff operated under no pressure on Monday. Robert Gasser had all the leash in the world, completing six frames, and with the game far out of reach for Tampa Bay the Brewers were able to hand things off to a rather unimportant reliever in Antonio Senzatela and the last man in their bullpen, Brandon Woodruff.

So, not only were the Brewers able to win but they were able to save essentially their entire staff for Game 4 — meaning it's time to save Jacob Misiorowski for a potential Game 5 and see what the bullpen can come up with on Tuesday.

Now, we highlighted the massive decline in the Rays' performance against lefties, against whom they ranked just 26th in wRC+ in the regular season, and Milwaukee has five southpaws in its bullpen ready to deploy. We may very well see an all-lefty approach early with Kyle Harrison, Shane Drohan and Aaron Ashby taking up the vast majority of this game, with higher-leverage arms or right-hander Dustin May ready to go after that.

Having a lefty on the hill worked wonders in Game 3 as Kevin Cash sat some of his best bats in Jonathan Aranda and Liam Hicks, so with the pitching plan a mystery you'd put your money on the Brewers doing the same thing again on Tuesday to either neutralize those two or send them to the bench for part of the game.

So, with the series almost certainly out of reach for Tampa Bay, the Brewers will simply turn to the third-best bullpen in baseball this year, and one which owns a 1.34 ERA to rank second this postseason to just the Yankees.

Tampa Bay Rays Betting Preview

The Tampa Bay Rays, in what's essentially panic mode, will begin Tuesday's game with Griffin Jax. A converted reliever at the age of 31, Jax pitched just fine for the Rays in 112 1/3 innings this season, posting a 3.53 ERA.

He struck out 25.3% of the batters he faced with a 7.6% walk rate, something that should come in handy against a very patient Brewers team, but he also did allow his fair share of barrels and came home with a shaky .253 Expected Batting Average and .407 Expected Slugging against.

Of course, the playoffs can be a different beast, and through six innings now he's allowed four runs on six hits with a 6:3 K:BB. It's not as if he's pitched all that poorly, with a .238 xBA this October, but he's been getting fewer chases out of the zone and swinging strikes all while throwing his changeup a lot more.

The Brewers crushed changeups from righties this season, finishing with a .252 xBA and .385 xSLG to rank third in baseball, but against sinkers they were back in the middle of the pack. If he is wise, Jax will throw more sinkers here and hope the Brewers beat the ball into the ground — just as they — and many others — have done against the pitch this year.

It will come with a note of caution, however, because the Brewers were actually better in OPS to ground-ball pitchers versus fly-ball pitchers this year, ranking third in baseball.

As we noted above in Milwaukee's section as well, it'll be interesting to see what Kevin Cash does here with the lineup. He benched two of his best hitters, who happen to hit at the top of the lineup, to avoid matching them up with a lefty in Game 3. By the time they could get into the game, the Rays were down 10 runs. Now, they'll certainly either start here or come in with the game within reach, but Milwaukee's endless supply of lefties could make matters difficult.

Brewers vs Rays Pick, Betting Analysis

Everyone wants to be the one to successfully call the end of a trend, and in this series I'm not sure how many people really want to keep taking the Brewers. The Rays are a good ballclub, and prior to the series I did call a gentleman's sweep. In my gut, that's how I felt this one goes, but the potential for another brutalizing pitching performance from Milwaukee is too strong.

Tampa Bay was brutal against left-handers this season, ranking 26th in wRC+, but the crazy thing is that it was ranked 11th in batting average. The issue has come in slugging, where its mark of .364 is fourth-worst in baseball, and it's also come in the form of a 7.9% walk rate. It's going to be very hard in the playoffs to get a ton done against lefties, especially of this caliber, when you're just trying to string together hits.

Yes, we know the Rays have done that all year, but we have already seen in this series how strong Milwaukee's defense is and just how many blows it takes to get a runner across. Remember, aside from one inning, this offense has been completely dormant.

The smart money is on that trend sticking, and on one of — if not the best — bullpens in baseball. Milwaukee will have an abundance of premium, well-rested lefties, and that should bring the Rays' season to a sad, yet merciful, end.

Pick: Brewers ML (-124) | Play to -130
