Doug Zeifel’s Braves vs Phillies Preview
While it has not been the season Braves fans hoped for, Atlanta has a chance to play the spoiler in the NL East in this series. Just five games separate the Phillies and Mets, while Atlanta is 16 games out.
However, doing so will be tougher than it looks, as Atlanta faces a pitcher who has had their number in Ranger Suarez. Suarez has notably dominated the Braves in recent seasons with stellar performances against them in the regular and postseason.
As a team, Atlanta has hit just .217 off Suarez with an average exit velocity of 84.5 mph, and they have struck out 21 percent of the time. While that strikeout rate is just below average, Suarez has collected them in bunches, having recorded at least six strikeouts in six of his 11 career starts against the Braves, which includes his last five starts.
Team history aside, we've seen Suarez flash big strikeout upside lately as he's racked up 21 strikeouts over his last two starts combined.
As for the Phillies, the sky was falling just 24 hours ago as they were fresh off a three-game sweep at the hands of the New York Mets. Well, the Phillies got up off the deck in emphatic fashion as they won 19-4 last night, and Kyle Schwarber became the 21st player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game.
In such outbursts, we often see teams regress significantly the next day, as it seems they should've saved some runs for the following game. However, tonight they have an opportunity to continue their offensive barrage against Bryce Elder.
Elder is an elite groundball artist, but he is no stranger to hard contact and allowing runs, as evidenced by his 6.12 ERA on the season. The Phillies have also seen the ball well off him, as they have a collective batting average of .290 and an average exit velocity of 92.1 mph.
That amount of hard contact points to positive regression for the Phillies bats against Elder tonight. So, whether the ball is on the ground or not, look for Philly to continue to hit the ball hard.
Braves vs Phillies Prediction, Betting Analysis
The Phillies are in a great spot to build off last night's performance, and Ranger Suarez is a big part of that. The lethal lefty hander is expected to deliver six quality innings, which gives him a great window to exceed his strikeout total against a Braves lineup that has been unable to solve him.
Take the plus money value and back Suarez to shut down the Braves again tonight.
