Alex Hinton’s Braves vs Phillies Preview
The Braves continue their tour of the NL East as they head to Philadelphia for this four-game series. After dropping two of three against the Mets, the Braves took two of three in Miami. They enter this series having won 14 of their last 20 games.
Their bats continue to lead the way, averaging 5.5 runs per game in August. They have scored 23 runs in their last two games. Michael Harris Jr. had been one of the league's hottest hitters for the previous month and a half, but appeared to be leveling off of late. He is just 3-for-24 over the last week, but one of the hits was a home run yesterday. He has two doubles and three home runs in 30 at-bats against Nola as well.
Harris is one of several Braves with solid history against Nola. Ronald Acuna Jr. is 19-for-55 (.345) with six doubles, four home runs, nine RBI, and a 1.092 OPS against Nola. Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, and Marcell Ozuna all have two home runs or more off Nola as well. Olson and Albies joined Harris in homering yesterday as the Braves hit five on the day.
The Braves may need to continue leaning on their offense as Quantril gets the start tonight. After a promising start to his career, Quantril essentially has had an ERA of 5.00 or higher in each of the last three years. However, after all the injuries to their starting pitchers this season, the Braves need innings from him to get through the remainder of this season. He gave 4 and 2/3 innings in his Braves debut, allowing three runs on five hits against the Mets.
For the Phillies, Citi Field continues to be a house of horror. Including the playoffs, the Phillies have now dropped 10 games in a row at Citi Field following last night's 6-0 loss to the Mets. As a result, their lead in the NL East is down to four games with a month remaining in the regular season. Fortunately for the Phillies, they return home, where they are 42-22 at Citizens Bank Park this season.
Nola will get the ball to open this four-game series. The 32-year-old has been one of the top starters in the NL for the past decade, but 2025 has been a rough year for him. He was struggling to start the year and then landed on the IL after allowing nine runs to the Cardinals. His first start after returning was more of the same, as six runs in 2 and 1/3 innings against the Nationals.
Nola was much better last time against Washington, posting a quality start as he went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out six. He gets another NL East foe tonight, but one he has struggled against at times with tonight's Braves lineup. However, should Nola run into trouble tonight, his offense should be able to pick him up.
The Phillies average 5.29 runs per game at home, and they have strong numbers against Quantrill, hitting .283 collectively. Trea Turner leads the way — as he likely will in their lineup tonight — in that regard, as he is 5-for-11 (.455) with two doubles and two home runs against him. Harrison Bader (three home runs and a double), Alec Bohm, and Brandon Marsh are all hitting over .360 against Quantrill. Kyle Schwarber is just 3-for-19 with seven strikeouts against him, but all three hits were home runs.
Braves vs Phillies Prediction, Betting Analysis
Quantrill and Nola have an ERA over 12 combined. That does not mean there will be 10 runs in the first three innings, but there could be a lot of offense early, and we may need only a run or two late off either bullpen. Additionally, both teams come into this game with solid batting averages and strong numbers against their respective starters.
Per StatCast, Citizens Bank Park ranks ninth in Park Factor, and there appear to be good hitting conditions with tonight's forecast. That should lead to at least 10 runs tonight.
