Orioles vs Mariners MLB Betting Preview
Betting the under on George Kirby walks was one of my favorite things to do last year, and we're getting a bit of a discount today after his rough first two starts back from injury.
Kirby made 33 starts last year, and he walked zero in 14 of them. That's a 42% hit rate and implies odds of +138.
He's walked one and two batters, respectively, in his first two starts, and hasn't looked great.
But today, he's facing an Orioles offense that loves to swing the bat. Baltimore has the fifth-lowest walk rate against right-handed pitchers and the fourth-highest strikeout rate.
It's actually a good offense, ranking seventh in wRC+ against right-handers, despite the team's struggles as a whole. But if Kirby is living in the zone — which he does — the Orioles are going to swing the bat.
Orioles vs Mariners Pick, Betting Analysis
I see this playing out in one of two ways: If Kirby is still struggling, it's going to come in the form of a lot of hard contact. If he's back, it's going to come in the form of a lot of whiffs. In neither scenario is he allowing free passes.
If you took 2024 at face value and said, "OK, it's +138 that he doesn't allow a walk," that's one thing. But then you have to factor in the offense he's facing. I think +160 on him to have a walk-less start is great value.
Pick: George Kirby Under 0.5 Walks (+160 at bet365)
