Charlie Wright’s Reds vs Padres Prediction, Betting Analysis
It's been exactly a month since we successfully bet against King. He had missed 2.5 months with a thoracic nerve issue and made just 1 rehab appearance, a 61-pitch outing at Triple-A. King labored through 2 innings against Boston in his return, tossing 57 pitches before being yanked. He then immediately went back on the IL with knee inflammation. AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reported that King believed the knee soreness came from trying to ramp up too quickly.
Fast forward a month and we have a similar situation. King skipped a rehab assignment entirely this time, instead throwing 5 innings in a scrimmage at the Padres' Arizona Complex League facility. The fact that King went 5 innings in a non-competitive environment doesn't mean he'll be able to do it in an MLB setting. It also doesn't mean the Padres will let him try to do it.
The Padres desperately need King for the postseason. They have to get there first, but they have a bit of cushion for a Wild Card spot and are only a game out of 1st place in the NL West. I'm viewing this as more of a ramp-up outing for King. Lefty Kyle Hart would make for a decent piggyback option. He's been working in shorter stints recently, but has made several starts this season and hasn't pitched since Wednesday.
Pick: Michael King Under 14.5 Outs (-115, Fanatics)
