Charlie Wright’s Rockies vs Cardinals Preview
St. Louis took measures to limit Matthew Liberatore's workload around the All-Star break. He threw just 73 pitches in his final start before the break, then his first turn following the layoff was skipped.
Liberatore has zoomed past his career high in innings, and his production has started to trail off. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the strategy hasn't paid off.
Liberatore has a 2.84 ERA in three starts since the All-Star break, but they haven't been good outings. He's failed to complete five innings each time. Shoddy defense makes the ERA look better, but he's given up nine runs in this stretch. Liberatore's xFIP and SIERA are up near 6.00.
More importantly for this bet, he has just five strikeouts to five walks across these three appearances with an abysmal 4.3% swinging-strike rate. Liberatore has just 10 whiffs across his past 12 ⅔ innings. He's not fooling anyone.
Colorado is a surprisingly difficult matchup. They have the fifth-lowest strikeout percentage among MLB lineups against southpaws since the start of June, also ranking in the top five in OPS and wOBA during the span. Sure, much of that is related to Coors Field, but they also have posted a 99 wRC+ during the stretch.
Notably, the Rockies' projected lineup is entirely right-handed. Liberatore has a meager 13.4% strikeout rate against righties since the start of June.
Pick: Matthew Liberatore Under 3.5 Strikeouts (+130, BetMGM)
