Giants vs Phillies MLB Betting Preview

Bryce Harper, despite all the Phillies’ struggles this season, has actually been excellent — 130 OPS+ with six home runs. He’s still taking his walks and avoiding strikeouts at a good rate.

Tyler Mahle, the Giants’ starter, has been allowing a lot of home runs, but the strange thing is, he’s inducing ground balls at a rate that looks unsustainable. His ground-ball rate through five starts is 53.4%. Last year it was 38.8%, and his career mark is 41%.

He might be locating well, but a lot of this is probably small-sample noise. I don’t see anything in his arsenal that suggests he’ll keep the ball on the ground at that rate long-term.

After his four-seamer (which he throws about half the time), he goes splitter, cutter, and slider. Harper’s expected stats against the splitter and slider in particular look really strong, both from last year and in the (still small) sample this season.

My best bet is Harper Over 2+ total bases at +114 on DraftKings right now. I’ll also sprinkle him to hit a home run.

Overall, I really like Harper tonight. It should be warm in Philly (low 60s) with the wind blowing out just a bit to right field. He can power the ball to all fields anyway, but that’s still a nice little boost.

Pick: Bryce Harper 2+ Total Bases (+114, DraftKings)
