Astros vs Guardians MLB Betting Preview
The Astros won the series opener 9-2, rocking Slade Cecconi for seven runs and 10 hits in only five innings. Houston has now scored four or more runs in four consecutive games, led by Yordan Alvarez, who is off to a spectacular start, slashing .326/.459/.756 with 10 home runs in 109 plate appearances.
Ryan Weiss will take the mound for the Astros in this game. It's been a rough start to the season for this new addition, but he did have some intrigue because of what he did in the KBO, putting up a 2.87 ERA with 207 strikeouts in 178.2 innings. Perhaps he just needs time to adjust to big-league pitching.
The Guardians will look to bounce back from their loss in the first game of this series. Cleveland has been good at home so far, winning seven of 11 games. Plus, they'll have the pitching advantage with Parker Messick on the mound.
The rookie lefty has been terrific so far this year, coming three outs away from a no-hitter in his last turn. But I have a feeling that we're going to see a letdown from him against a tough Astros offense.

Astros vs Guardians Pick, Betting Analysis
There's no doubt that Messick has been great. But here's the issue: his last start was at 112 pitches, as they were trying to get him the no-hitter. Previous outings: 84, 91, 76 pitches. Messick isn't accustomed to that kind of workload. What if it affects him in this start against the Astros, which is on four days' rest? Even if Messick still pitches well, it's unlikely that he goes deep into this game.
On top of that, the Astros have performed well against left-handers this season, putting up a 121 wRC+ (4th) and .194 ISO (4th). We've also got favorable weather conditions, with 11.9 mph winds blowing out to center, according to our Action Network app.
Then you have to consider that 3.5 runs is a low bar for this offense. They've gone over that number in 16 of 24 games this season.
Pick: Astros Over 3.5
