Kansas City Royals Betting Preview
Two teams that entered the season with playoff hopes are now fighting not to finish last in their division. The Royals currently occupy the fifth slot in the AL Central and could hold it for the rest of this season, despite a three-game win streak.
They lost AL MVP hopeful Bobby Witt Jr. to a back injury this week and may be without Jac Caglianone again today if his shoulder issue lingers. This is another lost season for the Royals and a sad twilight for franchise cornerstone Salvador Perez.
At 43-60 and 5 1/2 games behind the fourth-place Detroit Tigers, parts of this Royals' roster should be sold at the trade deadline if possible. Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo are not playoff starters, yet could be valuable mid-rotation starting pitchers for teams making a push.
Lane Thomas is the only batter they could "sell high" on, but consideration should be made for selling low on Vinnie Pasquantino. Pasquantino is under cheap control for the next two seasons, but he is turning 29 in October and clogging a first-base spot better suited for Caglianone. If Pasquantino had produced more than 4.3 fWAR through 768 career games, maybe he would be worth keeping.
Nevertheless, this Royals' roster is unserious, and their farm system is just as mediocre, if not more. There is no savior in the wings. Carter Jensen and Caglianone were the two biggest recent prospects, and they have graduated.
Kansas City needs to act now with whatever their vets can get them and pray for proper development.
Detroit Tigers Betting Preview
The Tigers are not far off from the Royals, yet much better positioned. They are six games below .500, but just 6 1/2 games behind the division lead.
This roster is very talented, with a strong offense and starting pitching. However, they have played inconsistent baseball. Kevin McGonigle's AL Rookie of the Year campaign and Dillon Dingler's breakout are not enough to carry this team.
Losing ace Tarik Skubal for a month did not help, but that is just one issue. Gleyber Torres is having an injury-riddled year, and Framber Valdez is looking like a terrible offseason signing.
The offense lacks chemistry. Their bottom-two hitters and bench put them in tough spots for late-game scenarios. Meanwhile, their bullpen is not good enough to keep tight games winnable.
This team says Skubal is not for sale, but given their poor depth, place in the standings, and Skubal's impending free agency, he should be pitching elsewhere in August.
Royals vs Tigers Pick, Betting Analysis
We are taking the over in a matchup between two pitchers with ERAs below 2.00.
Randy Dobnak is making his fourth appearance of the season (all in July). He has allowed just three runs in 14 IP, yet his walks exceed his strikeouts in this span. That is usually a bad sign for pitchers, and it is reflected by Dobnak's peripheral ERA statistics all starting above 5.00.
Troy Melton's 1.80 ERA is much more "real" than Dobnak's 1.93 ERA. However, Melton's ERA is backed by a 3.03 xERA, 3.76 xFIP, and 3.85 SIERA. The Tigers' 2026 breakout SP is getting lucky this season and could regress at any moment.
This Royals' offense is not daunting, especially without superstar Bobby Witt Jr., but they can be a nuisance for Melton. If Jac Caglianone is back in the lineup, the Royals could have up to seven left-handed hitters in the lineup.
Melton has extreme splits, favoring his matchups against righties. He is well below average against lefties, but dominant against righties.
While both offenses today are just below average against RHP and in the past several weeks, there will be plenty of opportunities to produce.
The Royals are complementing their Randy Dobnak start with one of the worst bullpens in baseball. Detroit's bullpen is above-average, yet they may not have closer Kenley Jansen available. Jansen has pitched three times in the past four days, leaving his status in doubt.
Also, with Keider Montero no longer in the bullpen, the Tigers lose a significant piece to neutralize opponents.
