Angels vs Phillies MLB Betting Preview
Offense has been the theme throughout the first two games of this series, and the Angels have supplied plenty of it. Fifteen runs through two games is impressive for a lineup that has a wRC+ of 97 and the second-highest strikeout rate in the majors.
However, the power upside in this lineup when they do make contact is evident, as they hold the fifth-highest ISO in baseball. But they're overdue for a power outage, and Phillies starter Ranger Suarez is set to pull the plug on this lineup.
Suarez has been a nightmare for opposing hitters as he has allowed the lowest amount of hard contact among all qualified pitchers. His average exit velocity against is in the 100th percentile, and his hard-hit rate against is in the 99th percentile.
On top of that, over half of that soft contact has been on the ground as his groundball rate is in the 85th percentile. Generating soft contact and keeping the ball in the air is the recipe for success when pitching at Citizens Bank Park this afternoon.
As for the Phillies, it's a similar story. They've also benefited from the optimal hitting conditions during this series.
Yesterday, a go-ahead grand slam from Kyle Schwarber helped them even the series, but in order to close it out, they'll need to try to lift the ball against Jose Soriano.
Soriano is the game's best groundball artist, as over two-thirds of balls put in play against him are on the ground. He generates grounders at an elite rate with his sinker that sits at 97 mph, but if the Phillies want to have success against him, they must remain disciplined.
The Phillies' lineup is peculiar, as they have the sixth-highest walk rate, but also hold the seventh-highest chase rate in baseball.
The level of discipline the Phillies show this afternoon will dictate their success against Soriano, but we should expect plenty of grounders either way.
Angels vs Phillies Pick, Betting Analysis
While the market has come in and bumped this total up, as hitting conditions are excellent once again, these starters profile as two of the best options for success in a hitter-friendly environment.
They both keep the ball in the yard at an elite clip, and that's because the majority of contact made against them is on the ground. So, I'm opting to back them both by taking the first five under.
