Tony Sartori’s Angels vs Mariners Preview
Jose Soriano is enduring his worst season as a professional. Through 29 starts, Soriano owns a 4.07 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.
His underlying metrics are even worse. This season, Soriano holds a 4.10 expected ERA (xERA) and .255 expected batting average (xBA).
The right-hander also ranks in the fifth percentile in average exit velocity, 15th percentile in walk rate and fourth percentile in hard-hit rate. Following Soriano is one of the worst bullpens in baseball.
Entering this matchup, Los Angeles’ relief corps ranks in the bottom five in ERA, fielding independent pitching (FIP), expected FIP (xFIP) and wins above replacement (WAR).
Meanwhile, Seattle’s bullpen is due for regression. Despite some intermittent success, the Mariners’ relief corps ranks in the bottom half of the league in xERA and WAR.
This bullpen might get called upon early, given that Bryce Miller takes the mound for Seattle. After a stellar 2024 campaign, Miller has regressed significantly this year.
Arguably one of the weakest pitchers in the American League, the right-hander owns a 5.53 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through 14 starts. His analytics suggest little improvement is coming.
This season, Miller ranks in the eighth percentile or lower in xERA, xBA, average exit velocity and hard-hit rate. These struggles are likely to continue against the Angels, a team that shelled him in their most recent meeting.
Angels vs Mariners Prediction, Betting Analysis
In that outing, Miller surrendered five runs on seven hits across five innings. There were nine total runs scored in that game, and another high-scoring affair is likely Thursday.
The good news for Miller is that he should receive plenty of run support, as the Mariners rank in the top half of the league in runs scored per game, on-base percentage (OBP), slugging percentage (SLG) and OPS.
On the other hand, the Angels can provide some power of their own, ranking in the top half of the league in SLG and home runs.
Pick: Over 8 (-105, BetMGM; Play to -110)
Moneyline
I lean toward Seattle, but I don't trust Miller.
Run Line (Spread)
I also like Seattle to cover, but I'm staying away for the same reason listed above.
Over/Under
As mentioned, I'm betting Over 8.
