Dodgers vs Brewers MLB Betting Preview

Yesterday's guide was followed to near perfection by the Dodgers. They got Gasser and forced him out before the end of the fifth and then went to work on the taxed Brewers bullpen, scoring seven runs in the final two innings of the game.

Today, they have an opportunity to stay hot and capitalize on a young arm that has looked unpolished at the big-league level.

Brandon Sproat was a big piece of the Freddy Peralta trade with the New York Mets this past offseason. The Brewers starter was thought of as an MLB-ready arm with high-caliber stuff.

Well, it turns out that his fastball is below average stuff-wise, and it's his slider that has become his best weapon against big league hitters. However, his issues with fastball command have nullified his ability to get ahead of hitters and use his slider more effectively.

Per Handigraphs, Sproat's first pitch strike rate is well below average at 56.6 percent. He's falling behind nearly half the hitters he faces, and against the Dodgers, that could prove to be a deadly flaw.

The Dodgers lead the majors in wRC+ not only because they have plenty of power with hard contact in their lineup, but they also have tremendous discipline and a high contact rate that allows them to create traffic and score in bunches like we saw last night.

Dodgers vs Brewers Pick, Betting Analysis

As I explained above, Sproat's command issues are a major red flag heading into this outing. Not only does it make him vulnerable to big innings and working with traffic, but it also limits his strikeout upside against a Dodgers lineup that holds the seventh-lowest strikeout rate in the majors.

With Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the other side of this matchup, fading Sproat directly is the strongest angle to take in this series finale. Expect the Dodgers to make Sproat's first time through the order very difficult.

Take the under on his strikeout prop.

Pick: Brandon Sproat Under 4.5 Strikeouts (-118, FanDuel)
