Miami Marlins Betting Preview

After a slight hiccup in May, Sandy Alcantara is back to dealing. He's steadily lowered his expected numbers since then, checking in with a splendid .200 xBA this month to bring his season mark to an acceptable .251, and his xSLG remains 33 points below the league average.

He's done a good job of getting outs on the ground around dwindling strikeout numbers, something that took him three years. Now 30, the right-hander is an effective pitch-to-contact arm, and he still has expert control with a 6.5% walk rate.

Where Alcantara struggles, interestingly enough, is on the road. He owns a 4.48 ERA away from Miami, and a 3.26 ERA through 10 starts at loanDepot Park. It's not a particularly pitcher-friendly park, but it doesn't see many home runs — and that's the key for the former Cy Young Award winner. Alcantara, despite a relatively high ground-ball rate, has surrendered just four homers at home and 10 on the road. Opponents see a 170-point increase in OPS in the split, too.

This one will be set in Houston, ranked 10th in Park Factor for home runs, and it'll come against an Astros team with a solid .177 Isolated Power over the last two weeks.

Peter Lambert, on the other hand, has been geared heavily towards the gopher ball. His fly-ball rate is a whopping 8.3 points higher than average at 33.5%, but as we know this is often a way to limit hits at the expense of slugging.

The righty has been able to maintain a tidy .335 xSLG, however, though that's mostly due to his microscopic .199 xBA. He's coupled that with a solid 24% strikeout rate, which is now two points better than the league average, and while he's issued a walk to 9.5% of the batters he's seen, the results have been kind to him.

Lambert has been a bit worse at home with a 3.17 ERA, and he's surrendered seven homers in 10 starts. With that said, his WHIP stands at just 1.07 in these starts, so there's not much danger afoot when the homers come, and his outfield ranks sixth in Outs Above Average this season. If the ball isn't flying out of the park, then it's going to be tough to get anything going against the 29-year-old.

Of course, pitchers are volatile, and this is by far the best stretch of Lambert's third season. He owns a 1.02 ERA this month, striking out 23 in 17 2/3 innings, and those starts have come against the Rays, Rangers and Orioles. All three teams rank 12th or higher in wRC+ this month.

Marlins vs Astros Pick, Betting Analysis

While the Astros have flexed their power muscles at the plate this month, the Marlins have shown even more strength. Miami's .201 ISO ranks fourth in baseball this month, and it's come along with a solid 9.4% walk rate and 21.9% strikeout rate.

Of course, Lambert has been finding his punchies, and he's done so against some disciplined teams. He's only faced one team which likes to take walks this month, the Orioles, and he issued three free passes in that one — only to be rescued by Baltimore's horrific strikeout tendencies.

The same can't be said about Miami, and especially against right-handed pitching they lack a big punch. There will be many balls put in the air in this one between Lambert's extreme fly-ball rate and Alcantara's weak strikeout numbers, and you have to think with the way these two teams are mashing that we see some timely home runs.

Both men have been good, yes, but I think this matchup is too tricky for both of them to escape cleanly.
