Tony Sartori’s Brewers vs Cubs Preview
Brandon Woodruff has been sharp since returning to the rotation this season. Through seven starts, Woodruff is 4-0 with a 2.06 ERA and 0.74 WHIP.
His underlying metrics suggest that this dominance will continue. If Woodruff officially qualified, he would rank near the top of the league in xERA, xBA and strikeout rate.
That success is likely to continue against Chicago, as Woodruff is 2-1 with a 2.02 ERA and 0.79 WHIP over the past 11 meetings.
Behind the right-hander is a reliable bullpen. This season, Milwaukee’s relief corps ranks in the top 10 in FIP, xFIP and WAR.
Meanwhile, the Cubs’ bullpen is arguably their biggest weakness. Entering this matchup, Chicago’s relief corps ranks in the bottom half of the league in FIP, xFIP and WAR.
Not only do the Brewers own the bullpen advantage, but they also hold the edge in starting pitching. Right-hander Jameson Taillon carries a 4.44 ERA into this matchup, and his analytics are equally poor.
He currently ranks in the 34th percentile or lower in xERA, xBA, strikeout rate and barrel rate. Those struggles are likely to continue against Milwaukee, as Taillon is 1-3 with a 4.30 ERA over the past five meetings.
This current Milwaukee roster has posted a .272 xBA, .433 xSLG and .333 xwOBA through 152 combined plate appearances against Taillon.
Brewers vs Cubs Prediction, Betting Analysis
The hitting gap between these two teams continues to widen. The Brewers rank first in runs per game, second in hits per game, second in batting average and second in on-base percentage.
Chicago trails in each of those four categories. Combined with the pitching disparity, Milwaukee should prevail Tuesday evening.
Pick: Brewers Moneyline (-112 | Play to -120)
Moneyline
As mentioned, I'm betting the Brewers moneyline.
Run Line (Spread)
I also like the Brewers to cover, but I find more value in just taking the outright moneyline price.
Over/Under
I lean toward the over, but don't want to fade Woodruff.
