MLB Opening Day is finally here, but more importantly, that means the return of the NRFI and the YRFI, the two most electric bets in baseball.
There’s no pitcher in MLB better suited to kick off the NRFI than Jacob deGrom. Since 2019, deGrom’s record in the first inning stands at an impressive 64-9 for the NRFI. Last season, when facing batters for the first time in the order, deGrom allowed a mere 16 hits in 96 at-bats, resulting in an outstanding .167 average.
His performance against the Philadelphia Phillies is equally noteworthy: Kyle Schwarber is 2-for-14, J.T. Realmuto is 4-for-32, Alec Bohm is 0-for-8 and Nick Castellanos is 0-for-5.
Taking the mound for the Phillies is their longtime ace, Aaron Nola, who enjoyed a phenomenal year. Last season, Nola posted a 27-4 record in the NRFI, with an impressive 13-2 away-game NRFI split. When facing batters for the first time in the order, Nola faced 278 batters, allowing only 50 hits and one home run, resulting in a .180 average.
Nola has successfully held the Rangers’ top hitters, Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, in check, allowing just one hit between them in eight at-bats.
After securing a lucrative contract in the offseason, the former Met deGrom now has a new city to impress, while Nola, entering his contract year, is looking to cash in this offseason. Expect both pitchers to commence their 2023 campaigns in top form today.
As always, six outs for glory…
Pick: Phillies-Rangers NRFI (-170)
