On Wednesday, we travel to Houston to find value in a NRFI between the Houston Astros and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Astros will send out the best NRFI pitcher in 2022, Justin Verlander. Coming into today, Verlander is a near-perfect 25-1 to the NRFI with a perfect 13-0 home NRFI split.
When facing batters the first time through the order Verlander has dominated. In 220 batters faced he’s only allowed 38 hits, which is good for a .173 average. Verlander also performed very well against teams' leadoff hitters. In 77 leadoff hitters faced, he has only allowed 13 hits.
Surprisingly in his long career, Verlander has not faced many of these Diamondbacks hitters. The only one worth mentioning is Ketel Marte who is 2-for-10 in his career against Verlander.
When on the road this year the Diamondbacks NRFI at an alarming rate. They are 59-15, which is good for an 80% NRFI rate. They are also coming into Houston on a hot 9-1 NRFI streak.
The Diamondbacks will counter with their young ace, Zac Gallen. Coming into today, Gallen does not lag far behind Verlander when it comes to the NRFI. He is 25-4 overall with an impressive 12-2 road NRFI split.
Surprisingly, Gallen has performed better than Verlander against hitters the first time through the order, only allowing a .159 average. This also goes for facing leadoff hitters, where he is only allowing a .148 average.
