On Monday, we head to Los Angeles to find value in an NRFI between two American League teams — the Angels and Mariners.

The Angels send out their ace in Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani has gone 15-4 to the NRFI with an impressive 8-2 home NRFI split. When facing teams' leadoff hitters, Ohtani has performed well, allowing just a .196 average against.

Ohtani has collectively held the current Mariners lineup under a .180 batting average. Here are his best matchups:

  • JP Crawford: 2-for-8
  • Julio Rodriguez: 0-for-3
  • Ty France: 1-for-5
  • Mitch Haniger 1-for-9

In the last seven days, a few essential Mariner bats have struggled at the plate as well, hitting under .200:

  • Jesse Winker: 0-for-10
  • Ty France: 2-for-25
  • Eugenio Suarez: 3-for-18

The Mariners will counter with their newest addition, Luis Castillo. Coming into today, he's 13-3 to the NRFI. Castillo has yet to surrender a first-inning home run in 68 batters faced.

Castillo will get an Angels lineup without their top two hitters in Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon. Here's how Castillo has fared the rest of this Los Angeles team in the past:

  • Jared Walsh: 0-for-3
  • David Fletcher: 0-for-3
  • Luis Rengifo: 1-for-2

It should be noted that Walsh is in after a few days off in which he went 2-for-19 in his last 21 at bats. He's projected to bat fifth today.

With 50 first-inning plate appearances in the month of August, the Angels own a .188 average to rank 23rd in MLB.

The Angels are on an 8-2 NRFI tear, while the Mariners are on a 7-3 NRFI run in their last 10 games. Expect this trend to continue for both teams today.
