The Texas Rangers host the New York Yankees on August 4, 2025. First pitch from Globe Life Field is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET; the game will be broadcast on RSN.
After being swept by the Miami Marlins, the Yankees are now 4.5 games back in the AL East standings and have fallen behind the Red Sox. Aaron Boone refuses to press the panic button, but Yankees fans are certainly smashing it.
Texas is also 4.5 games back in AL West and 2.0 games out of a wild card position. There's a lot less panic and noise around the Rangers, but they're close to a similar desperation position as New York.

Mike Ianniello’s Yankees vs Rangers Preview
Luckily for the Yankees, they're giving the ball to their stopper, Max Fried. After coming over from Atlanta this offseason, Fried has been brilliant in New York. He's 12-4 with a 2.62 ERA across 22 starts and has reestablished himself as one of the game’s best pitchers.
He leads the majors in wins and has a top-10 ERA.
Fried utilizes an elite cutter to generate ground balls and induce weak contact. Opponents are rarely able to barrel up Fried. He also has great command and doesn't hurt himself with free passes.
He's done a great job pitching deep into games and helping the Yankees save the bullpen.
The Yankees' lineup continues to have a glaring hole with Aaron Judge on the injured list. They lead the league in runs scored, home runs and OPS on the season, but obviously, Judge had a lot to do with that. In the nine games without Judge, the Yankees rank 19th in wRC+.
It's not all doom and gloom offensively. Cody Bellinger has been red hot over the last month and Giancarlo Stanton has five home runs in 14 games since the All-Star break.
Anthony Volpe has seven home runs over that stretch and has at least been following up his atrocious defense with clutch home runs.
After looking like the worst pitcher in the league for the last four seasons, Patrick Corbin has rebounded remarkably since coming to Texas. He has a 3.78 ERA in 20 starts, his best mark since 2019, when he was brilliant in leading Washington to a World Series championship.
Tweaking with his pitch mix has been a big help. Corbin has all but eliminated throwing his four-seam fastball and has added a cutter to his arsenal that's been his most effective pitch.
He still doesn't miss bats and won't overpower hitters, but his mix of off-speed stuff has been able to limit hard contact this season.
The Rangers' offense has been one of the most disappointing groups in the league this season. Texas is just 21st in runs on the year and has been one of the worst teams at getting on base consistently.
The Rangers rank 29th in team on-base percentage at just .299. Only the Rockies have gotten on base at a worse rate.
Despite a talented lineup, the top starts haven't gotten the job done. Marcus Semien has been brutal, hitting just .229 with a .667 OPS, and Corey Seager hasn’t been much better.
Young players like Wyatt Langford and Josh Jung haven't been able to take a step forward.
Yankees vs Rangers Prediction, Betting Analysis
Fried is tied for the MLB lead in wins this season. He has a 12-4 record, and the Yankees are 15-7 in his starts. More importantly, they're 11-2 in his starts following a loss in the previous game.
Fried has been the stopper for them all season, and they desperately need him here.
I'm still not buying the Corbin resurgence. His xERA is still over four at 4.17 and he ranks in the bottom 25% of the league in xBA. He doesn't strike batters out, and all of his expected metrics are worse than his current stats.
His sinker was one of the worst pitches in all of baseball last season and is still allowing a hard-hit rate above 50%.
As much as losing Judge has hurt this Yankees lineup, they've still been better than the Rangers. In the week since Judge has been out, New York ranks 18th in wRC+ and Texas sits 21st. The Yankees have scored more runs and have hit 12 home runs to eight for the Rangers.
Texas will be in its much worse splits against a left-handed pitcher. The Rangers rank 29th in the league against lefties on the season, and the Yankees rank first.
New York has the much better pitcher, and I would still take its offense over the Rangers. It’s hard to quantify desperation, but if the Yankees don’t come out with some urgency here with Fried on the mound, it might be time to cancel the season.
