Charlie Wright’s Padres vs Cardinals Preview, Picks
The Padres have been putrid on offense over the past 30 days of game action.
They rank comfortably last in OPS and wOBA against right-handed pitching, and rank ahead of only the Rockies and Pirates in wRC+ during that stretch.
Michael McGreevy has pitched well in limited MLB action. He has a 2.81 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP across 51.1 innings of work the past two seasons.
McGreevy dominated the Rockies in Coors Field last time out, allowing 1 earned runs over 7 innings.
It was his 3rd career outing of 7+ innings and 1 ER or less, which is pretty impressive for a guy with only seven career starts.
McGreevy probably isn't a sub-3.00 ERA pitcher, as his ERA estimators are around 4.00 this year, but he's been effective so far.
I don't hate the full game team total for San Diego at u4.5 (-130).
The main issue is the Cardinals' recent bullpen usage. It's a good unit (7th in ERA, 4th in xFIP), but they've been worked hard lately.
Ryan Helsley, JoJo Romero, and Phil Maton have thrown two of the last three days. Kyle Leahy threw 30 pitches yesterday.
I'd prefer to stick to the first 5 innings approach.
