Phillies vs Mariners MLB Betting Preview

Philadelphia Phillies Betting Preview

The Phillies have been riding high in the past two weeks. They have won nine straight since the Field of Dreams game on August 13.

This push has them within three games of the division-leading Braves and has created a two-game cushion in their Wild Card slot.

The Phillies are a talented, veteran roster that is in the tail end of their contention window. They are heavily invested in core pieces like Trea Turner, J.T. Realmuto, and Aaron Nola, all of whom are fringing on the end of their careers.

They did not push their chips in with any big offseason moves, but adding Luis Arraez at the trade deadline has boosted their offense. Arraez's 112 wRC+ is the steady piece they needed in the top of their order.

Nevertheless, for any hope of postseason dominance, they need today's starter Zack Wheeler to regain his midseason form, Nola to continue his recent stretch of success, and the back end of the offense to wake up.

Seattle Mariners Betting Preview

The Mariners are as close to leading their division as they are to the final AL Wild Card slot (3 games). The AL West is putrid in 2026.

Between the Rangers, Astros, and Mariners, no clear leader of the pack has emerged. Per usual, the Angels and Athletics remain bottom-feeders here and throughout the league.

The Astros had maintained a lead in recent weeks, but that has dwindled to a tie with the Rangers. Seattle has won four of its past six games, yet this comes not long after a six-game losing streak earlier in the month.

Two of these recent wins have come via walk-off home runs from Leo Rivas and Randy Arozarena. These types of performances could be meaningless in a vacuum, but with two in the same weekend, maybe the team is amped up for the stretch run?

What should really help is the addition of Kade Anderson to their rotation. Anderson, the top pitching prospect in baseball, had been waiting in the wings for months, but the Luis Castillo trade opened up an opportunity for him.

Despite allowing two home runs later in his first start, Anderson looked excellent and should continue showcasing his stuff as the Mariners push for a playoff slot.

Phillies vs Mariners Pick, Betting Analysis

Zack Wheeler's last few starts have been rough. He has allowed 10 earned runs, 2 HR, 15 hits, and walked 10 batters in 15 1/3 IP. Wheeler has also not pitched into the sixth inning since July 21.

Nevertheless, this is a small sample, and one of those starts was shortened by a rain delay. Wheeler has been excellent on the road this season and should carry over that trend into tonight.

  • Wheeler on the road: 2.67 ERA, 25.4% K-BB, 0.92 WHIP, 2.81 xFIP

All of these marks are much better for Wheeler than when he is pitching at home.

Meanwhile, Logan Gilbert is a worse home pitcher. He earns more strikeouts, walks fewer batters, and has a lower WHIP, yet cannot limit the long ball.

  • Gilbert's HR allowed at home: 18 (85 1/3 IP)
  • Gilbert's HR allowed on the road: 2 (65 IP)

Furthermore, the Phillies' offense is one of the league's best in the past two weeks. They rank 5th (122 wRC+), while the Mariners in this span rank 13th (104 wRC+).

Lastly, the Mariners' bullpen is much more taxed than the Phillies' in recent games. Jose Ferrer, Eduard Bazardo, Seranthony Dominguez, and Michael Rucker have all pitched three times in the past five days.

With the Phillies' high-leverage bullpen arms better rested and available, they hold all the advantages today.

Pick: Phillies ML (-110)
