The defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies have been treated quite rudely in their opening series of 2023 so far. The Phillies have dropped back-to-back games to the Rangers in Texas and are yet to hold the Rangers to a single-digit run total despite premium pitchers Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler taking the mound.

Without Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins due to injury, the Phillies needed their big-time pitchers to step up, and that simply didn't happen in the first two games. Now this top-heavy team will need some of its role players to step up, or they'll be leaving Texas with their tails between their legs. Can they get the job done on Sunday Night Baseball?

The Parlay (+570):

  • Martin Perez 5+ Strikeouts
  • Corey Seager 2+ Total Bases
  • Rangers Moneyline

Same-Game Parlay – Phillies vs. Rangers

Martin Perez 5+ Strikeouts

Martin Perez maybe isn't the first pitcher that comes to mind when you're picturing a strikeout pitcher. However, he is coming off of a season where he posted career highs in both strikeouts (169) and Strikeout Percentage (20%).

Those aren't exactly eye-popping numbers, but Perez also ate innings last year. In 2022, he threw 196 innings for the second time in his career and the first time since 2016. Perez re-established himself as a solid big league starter for the Rangers last year, and they responded by paying him close to $20 million to return to the Texas rotation.

That's conviction.

I'm inclined to believe that last year wasn't a fluke and Perez will once again find away to consistently work deep into games. My projections have him completing six innings on Sunday night, and the strikeouts should be there if he works that deep into the game.

Corey Seager 2+ Total Bases

The Rangers have taken it to the Phillies in the first two games of this series by scoring at least 11 runs in both games. They've somehow accomplished this without the help of their best player, Corey Seager. Seager has just two singles and three walks in 11 plate appearances so far, but he's still their best hitter.

I believe Seager's bat will wake up against Phillies starter Bailey Falter. While Falter is left-handed, he still allowed a .186 ISO to left-handed batters last year, so he's not especially good at suppressing power no matter who is up to bat. After facing studs like Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler in the first two games, Seager is in a favorable spot to breakout Sunday night.

Rangers Moneyline

The Phillies appear to have a bit of a World Series hangover after falling short in the Fall Classic last October. Philadelphia is without Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins due to injury and is yet to receive a strong pitching performance from its starting rotation.

Even with the addition of shortstop Trea Turner this offseason, this looks to be a pedestrian offense at least until Harper returns. I expect Philadelphia to struggle until that happens and with the Rangers offense cooking and a clear starting pitcher advantage I like Texas to complete the sweep here.
