Cardinals vs Blue Jays MLB Betting Preview
Left-hander Quinn Mathews makes his MLB debut for the Cardinals on Saturday, and he could be a good candidate to back. The No. 6-ranked prospect in St. Louis' organization, Mathews was selected in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
A southpaw with a tall frame, Mathews struggled upon his first promotion to AAA. However, 2026 has proved to be a huge maturity year for the Stanford alum.
In 19 starts for the Memphis Redbirds this season, Mathews is 5-3 with a 3.13 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He battled injuries following a stellar start to his minor league career, which could explain his dip in production upon his call-up to AAA in 2025.
That said, he's fully healthy this year and proving that he can get back to the form that left him touted as MLB Pipeline's Pitching Prospect of the Year in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays hand the ball to right-hander Kevin Gausman. A veteran who uses a simple three-pitch arsenal, Gausman's underlying metrics suggest that he has pitched better than his surface-level stats indicate.
Entering this matchup, the right-hander ranks in the top half of the league in xERA, average exit velocity, strikeout rate and walk rate. This expected positive regression is likely to occur against St. Louis, a team he has fared well against throughout his career.
Over the past nine meetings, Gausman owns a 2.27 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Furthermore, the Cardinals have struggled at the dish.

Cardinals vs Blue Jays Pick, Betting Analysis
This season, St. Louis ranks in the bottom half of the league in hits per game, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS. Not that Toronto is any better.
Entering this matchup, the Blue Jays rank in the bottom four in runs scored per game, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS. It also won't help Toronto's cause that not a single player in this lineup has faced Mathews prior to Saturday.
Pick: Under 8.5 (-108 | Play to -115)
