Rays vs Athletics Pick, Betting Analysis
I'm going to keep fading Freddy Peralta until he shows any signs of life. It's tough to make a team debut at Coors Field, but he was hammered in his first start with Tampa Bay. They made a Rays-esque tweak and had him throw more changeups. Peralta threw the pitch 31% of the time, which was his highest usage rate since May.
The issue with the adjustment is that the changeup still sat at 87.3 mph, while Peralta's fastball was at 94.1. Unless Tampa Bay can help him regain the velocity he had on those two pitches last season, when they were an excellent combo, it might not be a worthwhile change. It's just one start, but the main takeaway certainly wasn't "he's fixed!" Oh, and now he has to go to Sacramento.
Jacob Lopez, on the other hand, might have figured it out. He has a 2.29 ERA supported by a 2.46 xERA in 4 starts since the All-Star Break. Two of those starts came in Sacramento in absolutely brutal matchups too (Nationals, Red Sox).
Lopez always seemed like he'd get back on track, with a 3.50 xERA suggesting he's pitched better than his 5.64 ERA. He's thrown a lot more cutters over his past 3 starts. It's not a great pitch, but it's a better option against righties than his changeup, which has an absurd .517 opponent BA and a .793 opponent SLG.
