Rangers vs Orioles Preview
The Rangers are off to a 3-1 start after taking their opening series against the Phillies and picking up a win in yesterday's series opener in Baltimore. After a disappointing 2025 campaign, these retooled Rangers look sharp to begin the year, especially on the mound, and the quality of pitching is going to take a step up tonight.
For the first time in 2026, it's deGrom day. Jacob deGrom's original first start was delayed as he had a stiff neck in Philadelphia. While I have to believe the injury report, the weather conditions are much more ideal for a 37-year-old pitcher today than they were Saturday in Philly, when it was 44 degrees and windy.
As we know, when deGrom has a clean bill of health, he's been one of the best right-handed pitchers of this generation. In 172 innings last season, he pitched to a 2.97 ERA and 0.92 WHIP while holding a 29.9 percent CSW.
Father Time has yet to catch up to a healthy deGrom, and he looked even more dominant in Spring Training. However, he was not stretched out much this spring, and prior to his originally scheduled start on Saturday, Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said that deGrom's first start would continue his ramp-up pace.
So, we likely have five innings as the maximum for deGrom, regardless of results. Although I anticipate those results to be great, as the Orioles have yet to get the bats going against righties, sporting a team ISO of .089 and a below-average hard-hit rate.
While deGrom is certainly the A-side of this pitching matchup, Orioles starter Zach Eflin deserves some love, too. Eflin enters 2026 due for plenty of positive regression as his 4.20 xFIP in 2025 is far more telling than his season ERA of 5.93.
Eflin is a guy who will get ahead early in counts and force opposing batters to chase as he posted an elite 32.2 percent O-Swing rate while holding a 63.4 percent First Pitch Strike rate.
Those two qualities make him a nightmare matchup for a Rangers lineup that has been undisciplined to start 2026. Texas has struck out 29.1 percent of the time and has a team O-Swing rate of 31.6 percent.
It's clear they haven't made much contact, and to make matters worse, when they have, it's been on the ground 48 percent of the time.

Rangers vs Orioles Picks
As has been the theme of this opening week of games, the starters are set to be ahead of the hitters in this matchup. While it won't be for the majority of this game, deGrom and Eflin should duel for up to the first five innings.
We've seen both lineups struggle, and it won't get any easier once the bullpens take over. Baltimore's bullpen is fourth in SIERA through four games, and the Rangers' pen has done a tremendous job at limiting hard contact.
Everything points to this game staying under the total.
Pick: Under 8.5
