Rangers vs. Astros Pick, Analysis

Hunter Brown was dominant in his last start, shutting down the White Sox with his most efficient outing of the season. He cut his ball rate down to 33% — well below the league average of ~37% — and saw a crisp spike in his CSW% (called strikes plus whiffs).

But one start doesn't completely overwrite a multi-week sample of extreme sloppiness. In the four starts prior, Brown recorded ball rates of 51% (against Baltimore), 44%, 45%, and 42%. He simply couldn't locate strikes.

When backtesting pitcher projections, I have to strike a balance between recency bias and season-long metrics. Brown’s expected FIP over his overall season sits closer to 4.30. While I’ve baked in a slight bump for his recent tweaks, I’m not overreacting to one strong start against a weak offense.

Nathan Eovaldi, meanwhile, remains the vastly more reliable option. Over their recent rolling samples, Eovaldi's K-BB% rate is 26% compared to Brown’s 5%—more than five times higher. Beyond starting pitching, these lineups are virtually identical in wRC+, and while Houston's bullpen is slightly better on paper, rest factors level the playing field today.

Over on Polymarket, the market has been bidding up Houston after Brown's last outing, leaving the Rangers "Yes" contract trading at around $0.46–$0.48 (46% to 48% implied probability). Traders seem to be over-indexing on Brown’s single good start, but my model projects Texas closer to a 52% win probability ($0.52 fair market value).

Any price on the Rangers contract below $0.50 (50¢) represents a clear structural edge. I'm taking Texas to win outright at current Polymarket prices.

Rangers vs. Astros Pick: Texas Rangers Moneyline (Trade "Rangers Win" at $0.46 / +115 equivalent)
