Doug Ziefel’s Rangers vs Blue Jays Preview
It has been a disappointing season for the Texas Rangers as they enter this series with a .500 record.
However, they are not far out of the playoff picture, and they are primed to snap their recent cold stretch as they send their ace to the mound, Jacob deGrom.
As a Mets fan, it warms my heart to see deGrom healthy and firing on all cylinders this season for Texas. The 37-year-old righty has pitched to a 2.86 ERA this season and turned back the clock on more than a few occasions.
He'll face a red-hot Blue Jays lineup that has been the best in baseball against righties over the past month.
However, this tough matchup on paper has brought deGrom's strikeout total down low enough to back him. He has recorded at least six strikeouts in 70% of his 23 starts this season, averaging 6.9 per outing.
The Blue Jays are bound to cool off at some point, and we could see that tonight against one of the best right-handed pitchers of this generation.
As I mentioned above, the Blue Jays have been rolling, and they enter this series 20 games over .500.
They have done so by putting the ball in play more than any other team in the majors, but their veteran pitching staff deserves credit as well.
Veteran is the best way to describe Chris Bassit, as the 36-year-old right-hander has kept the Jays in nearly every start he's made this season. Bassit has embraced pitching like a crafty veteran, throwing the kitchen sink at opposing hitters to generate soft contact.
He's done so quite often this season as his hard-hit rate allowed sits in the 84th percentile among qualified pitchers.
He'll need that trend to continue tonight as he faces a Rangers lineup that has finally shown signs of life over the past month against righties, but strikeouts have still plagued them.
Rangers vs Blue Jays Prediction, Betting Analysis
The Rangers are a surprising road favorite in this matchup.
While that is primarily credited to Jacob deGrom being on the hill, he's still not getting enough respect in the strikeout department.
His stuff has not declined; his 70% hit rate can't be faded at plus-money, even in the most brutal possible matchup.
Take deGrom to record at least six strikeouts tonight.
Pick: Jacob deGrom Over 5.5 Strikeouts (+104, FanDuel)
