Collin Whitchurch’s Blue Jays vs Marlins Preview
Shane Bieber is making his much-anticipated debut with the Blue Jays tonight in Miami against the Marlins.
In Bieber's last rehab start, he hit 90 pitches and seven shutout innings, so many are expecting him to be at or very close to full strength here in his first MLB start in 16 months.
He made two starts for Cleveland at the very start of the 2024 season before going down with an injury and has been out ever since.
That may very well be the case; he may be at full strength. However, Bieber's outs recorded line at 17.5 intrigued me. It was a lot higher than I expected to get from a pitcher back after being out that long.
The Blue Jays haven't said anything about limitations, so I'm hesitant to bet against him from a workload perspective.
I will, however, bet against him in the strikeout department. Even before his injury, with the exception of his two starts in 2024, his strikeout numbers have been declining from his Cy Young peak in 2020 and 2021.
The Marlins have the fifth-lowest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching since the trade deadline. And if you want to go for the full-season number, they're still in the bottom eight.
The Marlins are not what you think of as an elite offense, but they don't strike out that much, particularly against righties.
Blue Jays vs Marlins Prediction, Betting Analysis
I think Bieber was a nice buy-low acquisition for the Blue Jays in their pennant push at the trade deadline, although I want to see him a time or two before I'm really buying him.
It will take him a little bit to get his legs under him tonight, and he faces a team without a lot of swing and miss in the lineup, especially since sending Jesus Sanchez to Houston at the deadline, one of their more strikeout-prone hitters.
So I'm on Bieber Under 5.5 strikeouts tonight.
Pick: Shane Bieber Under 5.5 Strikeouts (-155, DraftKings)
