Toronto Blue Jays Betting Preview: Be Skeptical of the 'Pen
Toronto is going with a bullpen game in this contest, which is a questionable decision. Opening the game is right-hander Louis Varland, who struggled in Game 3.
Credited with the loss, Varland surrendered two home runs and allowed New York to extend the series. While manager John Schneider is giving Varland a shot at redemption, the right-hander’s underlying metrics from the regular season suggest he could be on fade watch once again.
In 2025, Varland posted a 4.02 expected ERA (xERA) and .261 expected batting average (xBA). He also finished in the bottom half of the league in average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate.
Following Varland is a struggling relief staff. This season, the Blue Jays’ bullpen ranked in the bottom half of the league in ERA, xERA and wins above replacement (WAR).
New York Yankees Betting Preview: Schlittler Gives Yanks Much Needed Edge
On October 2, a star was born. Right-handed rookie Cam Schlittler took the mound for New York in a winner-advances wild-card game against the Boston Red Sox. How did he perform? The young hurler tossed eight shutout innings while striking out 12 batters.
Schlittler pitched well all season, posting a 4-3 record with a 2.96 ERA and 1.22 WHIP through 14 starts. He also finished in the top half of the league in xBA, average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate.
The right-hander carries a ton of momentum and confidence following that start against Boston, which could prove paramount once again in a win-or-go-home situation. Add to that the fact there is no true starting pitcher to rival him on the other side, and Schlittler just has to focus on his own game. The pitching edge goes to the Yankees.

Not only do the Yankees own the pitching advantage, but they also boast the hitting edge. This season, New York ranked higher than Toronto in runs scored per game, home runs, slugging percentage (SLG) and OPS.
The Yankees also have a respectable bullpen that finished seventh in xERA. That said, with Schlittler taking the mound again, they likely won't be called upon until late in the contest.
