Derek Carty’s Nationals vs Diamondbacks Preview
Here’s a pitcher I think is fraudulent.
Nationals starter Jake Irvin started last season similarly to this one, posting an ERA around 3.50 for the first half of the year before seeing serious regression in the second half.
Despite that 3.42 ERA, he’s the same guy this year. Actually, he might be worse — he’s lost two ticks of velo, and his Stuff+ mark is down five points across his arsenal.
He’s getting by almost solely on a lucky .229 BABIP allowed, which I don’t think will continue.
I don’t believe in Irvin as a quality starting pitcher. I think he’s going to get hit harder, and when he starts getting hit harder, his pitch counts become less efficient. He’s going to have to face more batters to get more outs.
Irvin doesn’t typically get a long leash, as he’s usually a 90-pitch guy. And this 90-pitch guy will be facing a patient Diamondbacks offense that takes pitches, draws walks, and runs pitch counts up.
I’m betting that Irvin doesn’t go six innings on Friday.
Pick: Jake Irvin Under 17.5 Outs (Bet at +130 | Currently -110 at BetMGM)
