Pistons vs Raptors NBA Preview
On Monday night, the Pistons went down to Charlotte and snapped the Hornets' nine-game winning streak with a 110-104 victory.
Cade Cunningham led the way with 33 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, while Duncan Robinson had 18 points and surprisingly only one 3-pointer. However, in the third quarter, the play on the court became secondary.
Jalen Duren had outscored Moussa Diabate 15-0, and then Diabate started an altercation after committing a foul. Following a lot of pushing and shoving, Miles Bridges made his way towards Duren, which prompted Isaiah Stewart to make a run from the bench to sprint at Bridges to defend his "little brother".
The league has not yet announced suspensions for the four players. However, I would not expect Duren to be available tonight, and Stewart may not be available for the rest of the month, given his history and the fact that he left the bench.
However, Monday's altercation overshadowed a bigger story for the Pistons. With their 39th victory, the Pistons are just one win away from joining the "40-20 club". In the 3-point era, 90% of NBA champions have reached 40 wins before suffering their 20th loss.
The Thunder have already gotten there with the Pistons and Spurs as the most likely candidates to join them this season, barring extended winning streaks from the Celtics and Rockets.
The Pistons will go for their 40th victory in Toronto against the Raptors in their first meeting this season. If the Eastern Conference standings hold, this could be a potential second-round matchup.
The Raptors would prefer to keep climbing, as they are 2.5 games back of the Celtics for the second seed. They will enter this matchup having won and covered seven of their last 10 games.
Balanced scoring has carried them this season, with Brandon Ingram averaging 23 points, Scottie Barnes posting 18.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 6.6 assists, and RJ Barrett scoring 17.2 points over their last 10 games.
The Raptors have scored 120 points in four of their past five games, but will face a stiff test against the Pistons defense tonight.
Pistons vs Raptors Predictions, Betting Analysis
Pistons Moneyline
The Pistons' and Raptors' recent history is really interesting because when the Pistons were beginning their rebuild, the Raptors were still a title contender. Yet, the Pistons would often find a way to upset them, playing for then-head coach Dwane Casey, who was fired by the Raptors after winning Coach of the Year.
Now, the Pistons enter tonight's matchup having won six straight in the series. Toronto will be without Collin Murray-Boyles tonight, and Jakob Poeltl (questionable) may not return. That means the Pistons may not be hurt much playing without both Duren and Stewart tonight.
The Raptors rank in the top 11 in offensive rating, defensive rating and net rating over their last 10 games, but all three of their losses in that stretch were against teams above .500 (Knicks, Timberwolves, and Magic), and two were at home. The Raptors are just 11-15 against teams above .500 this season.
Meanwhile, the Pistons are third in offensive rating and net rating and sixth in defensive rating over their last 10 games. They are also 16-6 against teams over .500 this season and will have the best player on the floor in Cunningham. If the game is tight late, look for Cunningham to lead the Pistons to their 40th win this season.
Cade Cunningham 35+ Points, Rebounds and Assists
Without Duren and Stewart, Cunningham figures to contribute on the glass a bit more as he is already entering with five rebounds in each of his last three games. He has scored 22 points in seven of his last 10 games with seven assists in each of them.
As a result, Cunningham has recorded 35+ PRA in seven of his last 10 games and in three of his last five against the Raptors.
Action PRO projects him to surpass this line (35) with 24.68 points, 4.81 rebounds and 8.54 assists.
Ausar Thompson 6+ Rebounds
Ausar Thompson also figures to be active on the glass tonight, as he is entering with six rebounds in five of his last six games.
Thompson averages six rebounds per game this season, reaching his average at a 65% clip this season. The Raptors are 14th in rebounds allowed overall and specifically to small forwards.
Scottie Barnes 8+ Rebounds
Barnes, Cunningham's high school teammate, enters the contest averaging over nine rebounds per game of late.
He has had eight rebounds in eight of his last 10 games, as well as in each of his last three against the Pistons.
Immanuel Quickley 12+ Points
Immanuel Quickley has averaged 17.2 points in his last four games against the Pistons, scoring 14 in each of the last three. He has also scored 12 points in nine of his last 10 games.
The long ball may help him get there since he has connected for two 3s in eight of those games.
