Suns vs Thunder NBA Playoffs Game 1 Preview
Oklahoma City Thunder Betting Preview
I wouldn’t play the spread here, but I do make the spread for this game Thunder -15.5 — which is a full point beyond the listed number in favor of Oklahoma City.
Number 1-seeds in the play-in tournament era are 8-2 SU and 6-4 ATS in Game 1s.
The Thunder's experience matters in this series. This is Oklahoma City's third playoff run as a 1-seed. They failed to cover against the Pelicans in 2024, and then absolutely smashed the Grizzlies last year.
Phoenix Suns Betting Preview
The Suns’ chances of an outright upset aren’t zero. Phoenix took two games from Oklahoma City outright this year.
The Suns compete and have a lot of athleticism to throw at the Thunder in the hopes of making this a single-possession game late.
The problem is, Phoenix just doesn't have enough firepower.
Devin Booker struggles against high defensive pressure systems, and Oklahoma City is the highest pressure system in the league. The Thunder will swarm and take away his comfort zone, forcing him to become more of a passer.
Suns vs Thunder Pick, Betting Analysis
Thunder -14.5 (Lean)
The Thunder give up a shockingly high three-point rate as a result of their scheme, and the Suns do have shooters to make them pay.
But, the Suns lack the interior scoring presence to balance and force them to collapse — and offensively, Oklahoma City has too many options with the emergence of Ajay Mitchell.
I don’t think there’s value on this spread — but if you want a lean, I lean toward the Thunder.
Suns Team Total Under 100.5
I have Phoenix projected for just under 100 points here. The risk is that oftentimes when Oklahoma City starts to put the hurt on defensively, it leads to transition points — and they just hit you over and over again in waves.
A safer play might be the Phoenix team total under. The average 8-seed point total since the Bubble is 99.6. It’s not a big edge, but it is the most likely outcome.
Phoenix is a moderate turnover team, and the Thunder just rip the ball from your hands constantly for turnover opportunities.
I like the under given the game style of both teams — but there’s a decent chance Oklahoma City drops a huge number on them, and entering garbage time, this turns this into a rout that goes over.
Devin Booker Over 6.5 Assists
The Thunder actually allow the 9th-highest assist rate in the league. They give up spot-up threes to take away pick-and-roll and isolation possessions.
Booker’s an underrated passer out of single coverage, and the Thunder won’t blitz him because they can trust their individual defenders to make him uncomfortable.
Jalen Green Over 2.5 Three-Pointers Made
Jalen Green shoots 43% from the corners, where the Thunder allow the highest volume of shots of any team in the league and gives up a 40% conversion rate.
Oklahoma City will live with any scoring Green provides.
Suns vs Thunder Best Bets
