I actually give the Trail Blazers a pretty good rating through the first few games of the season. They already showed what they are capable of when they smoked the Suns by a score of 124-83, and they present some very unique challenges.
Portland has a bevy of high-level perimeter defenders to throw at opposing stars, and I fully expect them to deploy Toumani Camara or Deni Avdija to play high-pressure defense for a majority of this game.
On top of their defensive versatility, their starting backcourt is very dangerous, rolling out Damian Lillard and Ja Morant.
The Blazers have the firepower and the defensive personnel to make life difficult, but they are running into a buzzsaw tonight.
Los Angeles Lakers Betting Preview
This Lakers team has really impressed me to start the year. I am incredibly high on this group, and I legitimately think they might be a 50-plus win team when all is said and done.
Coming off a 3-seed finish, they look like they are for real. Even with Portland throwing great defenders like Camara and Avdija at Luka Doncic to apply high pressure, he knows exactly how to break that coverage.
Because of the defensive attention Luka will command, I think this is a matchup where Austin Reaves can step up and do a ton of damage against this Blazers rotation.
A big part of my optimism for Los Angeles comes down to JJ Redick. Matchup to matchup within the Western Conference, I really love Redick as a coach, and I think he is already proving to be one of the best in the league.
As a quick aside, if you are looking at the futures market, JJ Redick to win Coach of the Year at 20-to-1 is a fantastic look. His media savvy and the narrative-based nature of the award make it a great value.

My play tonight is Lakers -2.5. I personally price this game at Lakers -3.9, so we are getting a distinct edge on the current market number.
There are some -115 prices out there for the -2.5, which I am comfortable laying, and I would even be fine taking this at -3 if the line moves.
Portland is a solid team, but Los Angeles has the superior coaching edge with Redick and the offensive weapons to break down the Blazers' pressure.
I will gladly back the Lakers to cover the short spread on their home floor.
