Clemson vs Syracuse College Football Preview
Clemson Tigers Betting Preview
Clemson has been a team that is hard to read from week to week, but it comes to Syracuse off its best performance of the season. The Tigers went into Tallahassee last Saturday and beat Florida State 36-24, a game in which they were outgained but did not turn the ball over once and took the ball away four times.
True freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds ran for 85 yards and was involved in three touchdowns, kicker Nolan Hauser made all five of his field goals, and cornerback Elliot Washington II came up with two interceptions. That is a formula for winning on the road: clean football, a quarterback who can use his legs, and a defense that creates short fields.
The path to this point has been bumpy. Clemson opened with a 51-10 loss at LSU, then won at Cal, beat North Carolina and Georgia Southern, and shut out Charleston Southern 37-0, but it has also lost at home to Miami by 28 and by four points to Virginia Tech, a game the Tigers could have won.
The offense is the reason for the swings. Clemson averages about 23 points a game, has a ground game that ranks in the middle of the pack, and has been inconsistent through the air since Reynolds took over for Christopher Vizzina in September.
The defense has been the steadier unit, allowing under 22 points a game. Swinney said after the bye that his first-team offense has not turned the ball over since it, which is the kind of discipline this road trip needs.
Syracuse Orange Betting Preview
Syracuse has momentum, coming off two of the most dramatic wins in the country. The Orange beat North Carolina 31-30 in overtime on the road, with Ahmad Miller carrying 32 times for 133 yards, and then beat No. 19 SMU 30-27 last Saturday on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Steve Angeli to Noah Meyers with 17 seconds left.
That is a team that has found a way to finish games, and it has done it with Steve Angeli back at quarterback after Amari Odom and Malachi Nelson took snaps in the games in between.
The strength of this team is its passing game. The Orange rank among the top 25 nationally in passing yardage, with Umari Hatcher the main weapon after a 224-yard game against Louisville, and a stable of backs in Miller and Tylik Hill that keeps the offense balanced.
The problem is the other side of the ball, where Syracuse allows more than 26 points a game and ranks 90th nationally in scoring defense. Last September the Orange beat Clemson 34-21 in Clemson, so they know they can win this matchup.
Three of their four losses this season came by eight points or fewer, which is why both of these recent wins felt like they could have gone either way.

Clemson vs Syracuse Pick, Betting Analysis
This is a good spot for the "Road Streak" system.
The multi-game road trip angle targets power-conference teams in conference play who are in the middle of a stretch of road games, on the logic that the market overrates home field and teams that travel in a row develop rhythm and purpose. Clemson has just come off a road win at Florida State, and Syracuse is in its second straight road game.
It's an ACC game, the total sits right around 50, a modest number that favors structured, efficient football over a shootout, and the line has moved in Syracuse's direction since it opened at Clemson -3.5.
One caveat worth noting: this is a two-game stretch, not a longer trip, and the Tigers are home against Georgia Tech next week, so it is more of an end-of-trip spot than the middle of one. The road-rhythm argument fits what Clemson showed last Saturday.
The matchup supports the Tigers. The Clemson defense, which allows about 21.6 points a game and ranks in the top 50 nationally, is the better unit on the field, and Syracuse's offense has to get through it after two wins that each needed a late score or overtime.
The Orange have also been loose with the ball, with nine interceptions on the year, and Clemson's defense has just come off a game in which it took the ball away four times. On the other side, a Syracuse defense that is 90th in points allowed gives Reynolds and the running game room to work, particularly if Clemson can keep playing the way it did in Tallahassee.
A fundamentally sound team that wins the turnover battle needs only a field goal, not a blowout, to cover 2.5.
Pick: Clemson -2.5 (-115, FanDuel)
