Georgia State vs App State College Football Preview
Georgia State Panthers Betting Preview
Georgia State arrives in Boone on a three-game losing streak and with a clear identity: this is a team that wants to run the football.
The Panthers average close to 200 rushing yards a game, which powered early-season wins over North Carolina A&T, Kennesaw State, Northern Illinois and Old Dominion, and it is the way they stay in games when the passing game, led by quarterback Cameran Brown, isn't carrying them.
A run-heavy approach also tends to shorten games, with long drives, a ticking clock, and fewer possessions for both sides.
The recent results have not gone their way. Georgia State has lost three in a row, 49-22 at James Madison, 38-32 at Arkansas State, and 31-20 at home to Coastal Carolina last Saturday, and the defense has been the issue in most of them, allowing around 27 points a gamethise season.
That is the key to this matchup. The Panthers are a team that can score, but they are also a team that needs to control the ball to give its defense a chance to get off the field, and a trip to the mountains to face a home favorite doesn't make that easier.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Betting Preview
Appalachian State has found ways to win close games and is now trying to figure out its offense. The Mountaineers beat East Carolina by three, Charlotte by five, Coastal Carolina by three on the road, and James Madison in overtime, and they opened the season with a 55-3 rout of Maine.
The defense has done most of the work lately, even with a banged-up front, holding Old Dominion to 10 points and Georgia Southern to 19 in a pair of losses where the offense could not finish the job. The Mountaineers scored just three points in each of those games, and in the Halloween night loss at Georgia Southern, a showdown for first place in the East, quarterback Malachi Singleton went 15 of 28 for 215 yards with two interceptions.
That gives this game a clear shape. App State is at home, where it has won three of four, and is a 5.5-point favorite against a team on a three-game losing streak, which is exactly the kind of position where a coaching staff will want to play it safe: lean on the defense, run the ball, avoid a repeat of the two interceptions at Georgia Southern, and let the defense do the rest.
The Mountaineers allow about 22.6 points a game, the better mark of the two teams by about four points, and the offense has shown it can be better than it was at Georgia Southern.
The line is a concern: Devon Manuel is out for the season, center Jayden Thomas, hurt in the Georgia Southern game, has an uncertain status for Saturday, and right tackle Tyriq Poindexter was hurt against James Madison.
Tight end Darrin Fugitt is targeting a return after missing last week, and running back J'Marion Burnette and receiver Nate Branch are available. A line in that shape is another reason to expect a run-first, conservative approach.

Georgia State vs App State Pick, Betting Analysis
This is a good fit for the "Home Fave Unders" system.
The system looks for regular-season games where the home team is favored by 2.5 to 19.5 points, and App State, favored by 5.5, sits comfortably in that window. The idea is that a home favorite plays to control the game rather than chase points, and the Mountaineers' situation fits that.
They are coming off a loss in which turnovers and a stalled offense were the story; they have a defense that has been their steadier unit, and they are facing a Georgia State team that wants to shorten the game as well.
The weather adds to the case. The current forecast for kickoff shows a northwest wind around 11 mph with humidity near 59%, a clear sky, and a temperature around 49 degrees, which clears the system's thresholds of 8 mph wind and 40% humidity and takes a little off the passing and kicking games.
The numbers back up the price. Appalachian State's games have averaged about 49 points this season, and half of them have finished under this number, including the 13-point game against Old Dominion and the 22-point game at Georgia Southern.
If Georgia State leans on its run game, as it should, and App State's offense stays conservative while its defense does the heavy lifting, there are not many possessions to get to 56. A 27-24 type game would sail under the total.
Pick: Under 55.5 (-115, FanDuel)
