Iowa vs Northwestern College Football Preview
Iowa Hawkeyes Betting Preview: They Never Change
Talk about an emphatic rebound. Iowa turned around from its 13-10 loss at Minnesota to thump rival Wisconsin, 30-0. It's the same Hawkeyes we've known throughout the years, which is far from an insult. In many ways, the offense still sputters — Iowa was held to less than 17 points three times this year, twice in losses — but an elite defense under Phil Parker leads the way.
Not many things are certain in life, but Parker leading the Hawkeyes to a top-10 defense is one of them.
For the first time in a while, Iowa doesn't have an All-American-caliber defensive back, and the pass defense numbers have tapered just a touch. Julian Sayin was able to complete 20 of 27 passes for over 300 yards and three touchdowns, and he's the only good quarterback Iowa has faced this year (and maybe the only one it will face all year). Against a primarily run-first slate of opponents, Iowa's swallowed offenses whole.
The offense has picked up some, but it's still plagued by a number of things. First, top back Kamari Moulton is done for the season with an upper-body injury.
Second, the quarterback position remains a focus as Jeremy Hecklinski briefly replaced Hank Brown, but Brown is back in the driver's seat. His good games have been great (20-of-24 for 222 yards and two scores against Wisconsin), but his bad games have been far too frequent (he has 12 or fewer completions on 20+ attempts three times).
With the best receiving cast in recent memory, Brown has been just okay.
There's almost nothing explosive about the offense, and the line is down despite landing on the Joe Moore Award midseason top 25. And as it's shown, Iowa is a team capable of ripping off comfortable wins over middling opponents, but its toughest games — Ohio State, Michigan, Minnesota, and even Iowa State — operate on thin margins.
Northwestern Wildcats Betting Preview: Endless October
Northwestern's poorly laid-out schedule is about to hurt the team significantly. It hasn't had a bye since Week 2, and this week against Iowa marks its eighth straight game, seventh against a power conference foe. On top of that, Northwestern returned home from the West Coast, where it lost a tight game at Oregon. Since the Big Ten expanded its boundaries to include the West Coast, Northwestern is 0-2 in games following that long-haul travel.
To make matters worse, QB Aidan Chiles is questionable for the contest after sustaining an injury last week against Oregon. Chiles' name goes next to a trio of defensive starters, all of whom have missed a number of games in a row.
The main focus coming out of Evanston has been the offensive playcalling by Chip Kelly, who molded this year's playbook around Northwestern's personnel. That's led to a delightful blend of old-school Wing-T football and new-age innovations. It's actually been extremely efficient, as the Wildcats rank 14th in points per drive scored and third in Adjusted EPA Per Play.
Defensively, the Wildcats have held up just fine, keeping Indiana in check for a large portion of that 29-23 road loss. Kelly played ball control while Northwestern's defense held Oregon to about 100 yards on the ground in last week's 34-26 nail-biter.
There's not much of a pass rush to speak of, and Northwestern's run defense is pretty poor. That stems from a defensive front that's simply outmanned in just about every matchup. With Iowa, Minnesota, and Ohio State all on deck, that trend is likely to continue.

Iowa vs Northwestern Pick, Betting Analysis
This line works effectively like an NFL line. Northwestern is a -2.5 home favorite in a game with a 44.5-point over/under. That total is actually up from its opening number (42.5) thanks to several sharp moves tracked by Action PRO. Given that 44 is a very key figure in college football totals, the value in betting the over is gone.
Kirk Ferentz is a master of these games. In games lined shorter than a field goal either way against Big Ten foes (whether Iowa is favored or not), Iowa is outstanding:
- Since 2015, 14-4-1 ATS when favored by -3 or less
- Since 2019, 16-4 ATS when an underdog of +3 or less, with two outright upsets this year
The market suggests Chiles is going to play this game. Iowa is a big enough opponent for Northwestern that it's not fair to call this a lookahead spot with Ohio State on deck. But laying 2.5 with Northwestern is the market's way of saying that Chiles is more likely to play than not.
Iowa's defense is built to contest offenses like Northwestern's. The Wildcats' offensive line has been decent, but not elite, and most of its production comes from scheme and the multiple attack that includes Chiles. Kelly is a brilliant play caller, but he's going against the FBS' best in Parker.
Given Iowa's track record and a low total, I'm taking the Hawkeyes to win this football game outright. They've already proved capable of winning games as a 'dog on the road with their win over Washington earlier. Iowa leads this series 58-28-3.
Consensus power ratings make this game a pick in Evanston.
Pick: Iowa +2.5 (-110)
