Old Dominion Monarchs Betting Preview: Beating Even the Most Pessimistic

It's been a rough follow-up to a historic season for Old Dominion. After losing its star quarterback and top rusher to the transfer portal, plus its ace offensive coordinator to Memphis, ODU has slid to a paltry 2-7.

Its season win total (6.5) has already verified to go under (+190). It took a monsoon to upset App State, and the only other win came over FCS bottom-dweller Norfolk State.

Regression on offense from last year's unit was inevitable, but the drop from 49th in Points Per Drive to 136th wasn't forecast by even the most pessimistic outlooks.

The high-water mark came just last week, when ODU scored 23 points, except that one of those touchdowns came on defense.

To make matters significantly worse, ODU's lone offensive weapon, QB Quinn Henicle, hasn't played since Week 7 due to an injury.

The defense is still pretty good, ranking inside the top 40 in Adjusted EPA Per Play and 15th in explosive play rate allowed (5.1%). But the better offenses in the conference, like James Madison and Georgia State, put up 40-plus.

Considering this offense can't sustain drives or put the team in a position to succeed, the defense has done a really solid job of staying out of trouble.

But the offense is the worst in the country.

"Bleak" is the word I'd use to best describe this season. Ricke Rahne may have bought himself an extension through 2029, but this follow-up act without Colton Joseph and Kevin Decker may cut that extension short.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Betting Preview: Another Slow Start Costing the Chanticleers

Death, taxes and slow starts at Coastal Carolina. Even the change to Ryan Beard hasn't remedied the Chanticleers' first-quarter woes. In one-score losses to App State and Georgia Southern, Coastal was outscored, 24-7, in the first quarter.

Even in wins, Coastal doesn't score quickly even if its defense holds opponents to zero. It was a problem that plagued Tim Beck last year and continues to haunt Beard this year.

This team might be the best 3-5 team among the non-power conferences. Of the five losses, four were decided by one score, including a near comeback at West Virginia to start the season.

It's been the Deuce Bailey show, and the freshman has spread the love. Five players have 20-plus receptions; none have 40; seven have over 100 yards, and none exceed 350.

Bailey has turned the Coastal offense into an explosive unit that thrives on high-risk, high-reward throws. Luck will have it that only five of Bailey's 11 turnover-worthy throws were actually turned over.

A poor conversion rate in the red zone is holding this unit back from what could be much more.

That offensive explosiveness is needed as the defense plays soft. It allows a 45.6% Success Rate, 105th in the country, and in all but one of Coastal's losses, its opponent breached 30 points.

While there have been no blowouts yet, that defense never really gave the Chants warm-and-fuzzy feelings with a lead or in tied games (127th in EPA Per Play while tied).

To play in a bowl, Coastal must win three of its final four games — a tall order for a team that visits both Louisiana and James Madison.

Old Dominion vs Coastal Carolina Pick, Betting Analysis

Low total or not, Coastal Carolina is a superior team with a far superior offense at home, where we can lay a touchdown. Old Dominion's strongest unit comes on defense, but the offense is so bad that 21 points could be enough to cover this number.

Marshall's offense ranks 100th in Points Per Drive and just put up 36 on the road — not coincidentally, that came after the game in which ODU was bounced from bowl eligibility.

For programs whose success is rooted in their ability to secure a bowl bid — especially a program like ODU, which has historically sat right on that 6-6 cusp — failing to reach that goal midseason can be disastrous for the rest of the season.

Consensus power ratings line Coastal around -9.5 here at home, and projections for each team tell two different stories.

This is a lopsided motivation between the Chants, who have little room for error, and the Monarchs, whose season is essentially over. The market suggests Henicle could return, but without him, ODU's offense hasn't produced more than two scores.

Last season, Beard went 3-1 as a home favorite, and this year he's 1-0. I anticipate a solid win for Coastal, with plenty left on the table.

Pick: Coastal Carolina -7 or Better
