Rutgers vs Northwestern College Football Preview
Rutgers Scarlet Knights Betting Preview
Rutgers comes to Evanston with some momentum after its first win over an FBS opponent this season. The Scarlet Knights went to College Park last Saturday and beat Maryland 37-30 despite trailing 23-13 at halftime.
Dylan Lonergan threw touchdown passes to KJ Duff and Clay Thevenin, Duff finished with nine catches for 113 yards and two scores, including a one-handed grab, and Thevenin added a rushing touchdown before Antwan Raymond's 2-yard run made it 37-23 with just over four minutes left.
Maryland got within a touchdown late and drove to the Rutgers 11 before a fourth-down pass fell incomplete, but Rutgers had already done the hard part by outscoring the Terrapins 24-7 after halftime.
That result matters because the Scarlet Knights' season has been defined by offense: they average 31.2 points per game, Lonergan has 1,066 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, Raymond has 498 rushing yards and five scores, and Duff leads the team with 741 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
The trouble is on the other side. Rutgers allows 402.5 yards per game (113th nationally), ranks 122nd in turnover margin at -5, and has lost to UMass, Boston College, USC, and Indiana, though it did cover against USC as a 21.5-point underdog in a 42-35 loss.
Rutgers also leads the FBS in the fewest penalty yards per game, at 28.7.
Northwestern Wildcats Betting Preview
Northwestern is ranked No. 24, but last Saturday was a reminder that the Wildcats can be had. They needed Jackson Kleather's 34-yard field goal with two seconds left to beat 2-5 Michigan State 24-21, trailing by eight early in the fourth quarter before Aidan Chiles tied it with a 1-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion.
Chiles has been excellent this season, throwing for 1,398 yards and nine touchdowns without an interception, with Caleb Komolafe adding 401 rushing yards and Griffin Wilde 482 receiving yards.
The Wildcats average 33.5 points per game and rank fourth nationally in red-zone scoring (96.4%), while their defense gives up 17.0 points per game, 26th in the country. Their only loss came 29-23 at Indiana.

Rutgers vs Northwestern Pick, Betting Analysis
This is a good fit for the "Unranked Road Trip" system's core idea, with two honest caveats.
Rutgers is the unranked road team; it's traveling to face a ranked opponent in Northwestern, and it was tested away from home last week and won. The market is also asking a lot of a Rutgers team that has scored at least 21 points in five of its six games.
The system is built around first-half windows, and the 16.5 full-game spread extends that logic: if Rutgers stays competitive early, as it did in the 42-35 loss to USC, it only needs to avoid the late separation that pushes a favorite past a big number. The other is that Northwestern is ranked 24th rather than a top-ten power, though the underlying dynamic, the public paying a premium for a ranking, is still at work.
The price is where the value sits. A 58.5 total with Northwestern at -16.5 implies a final of roughly 37-21, which means a Rutgers offense that has scored 21 or more in five of six games only has to hit its own average to cover. Northwestern also hasn't been covering numbers this size lately: it was a 7-point favorite at Michigan State and needed two blocked field goals and a last-second kick to win by three.
If Northwestern is going to win by 17 or more, it will need to turn Rutgers' turnovers into short fields, which is the real danger. The two offenses averaging 33.5 and 31.2 points should keep the scoreboard moving, and the half-point hook sits above the key number of 16.
Pick: Rutgers +16.5
