How Tulsa Reached the Myrtle Beach Bowl

Tulsa was due for a letdown following its 9-1 campaign last season.

Sharing a conference with Cincinnati and Houston, among others, doesn’t exactly help — especially considering the Golden Hurricane played one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country, with games against Oklahoma State and Ohio State.

They were relatively average across the board, going 6-6 overall, 7-5 against the spread and 7-4 to the over.

Tulsa fought tooth and nail for its bid. The Golden Hurricane went 3-0 the final three weeks, eking out an upset over SMU and an overtime rally against Tulane.

Head coach Philip Montgomery hasn’t won a bowl since 2016, which was also the only year he registered double-digit wins (10) with the program.

How Old Dominion Reached the Myrtle Beach Bowl

A six-win season doesn’t always guarantee a bowl, but it’s tough to deny Old Dominion’s closing argument.

Despite owning one victory entering Halloween weekend, the Monarchs rattled off five straight win and covers to close it out. They were one of the best bets in the Conference USA, cashing nine of 12 spreads.

Ricky Rahne’s squad pulled off three upsets in the back half of the schedule, none bigger than a 30-16 toppling of FAU as a touchdown ‘dog.

It’s the first bowl bid for the program since 2016, when the Monarchs defeated Eastern Michigan in the Bahamas Bowl.

After going 1-11 in 2019 and sitting out the 2020 COVID season, a postseason berth is certainly a win for ODU.
