UNLV vs Akron College Football Preview

UNLV Rebels Betting Preview: Room to Grow
Just looking at its 1-2 record, it's easy to say the start of the season has been disappointing for UNLV. The Rebels didn't get it done in a huge season opener at home against Memphis and then were shockingly blown out 44-6 by North Texas as 3.5-point favorites.
However, futures odds for the Mountain West remain undeterred (especially since UNLV is 1-0 in league play with a 21-6 win at Hawaii), keeping UNLV at +450, the third-shortest odds in the MWC.
Memphis and North Texas have no impact on the Mountain West race, but both are usable data points and raise a serious issue: this offense is a problem.
QB Jackson Arnold continues to take way too many sacks (11 so far), and the offensive line isn't getting near enough of a push to get Jet Thomas going in the backfield.
Due to all of those negative plays, UNLV puts itself in third-and-long frequently, and it's converting just 36% of those third downs (86th nationally).
As a whole, UNLV's defense keeps it in games. It held Memphis to 3-of-11 on third down and just seven first-half points, although things unraveled in the third quarter. It also held Hawaii to two field goals.
But unraveling seems to be a common thread against the more potent offenses. North Texas gained 70% of available yards, converted on over half its third downs and scored on 8-of-11 full drives (not counting the final kneel-down).
The secondary was supposed to be a strength, but opposing offenses have made their approach clear: push the ball downfield.
North Texas QB Tayven Jackson averaged +3.4 average depth of target (aDOT) against UNLV, higher than his following game at Texas State; Memphis QB Marcus Stokes averaged +0.8 aDOT over his season average (13.1).
Even Micah Alejado, who got nothing going, averaged +0.4 aDOT over his season average against UNLV.
Expect teams to continue this approach, especially given Jackson's and North Texas' success.

Akron Zips Betting Preview: Quarterback Issues
Just hours before the season was set to kick off, it was revealed that Akron starting QB Reese Poffenbarger wouldn't play because of eligibility concerns.
Although it initially seemed limited to Week 1, Poffenbarger hasn't yet suited up and remains doubtful. The writing on the wall suggests he probably won't play this season.
Instead, Akron has been led by 5-foot-11, 175-pound redshirt freshman Cibastian Broughton.
Through three games, it's clear Broughton wasn't slated to be QB1 in practice — he's averaging a paltry 3.3 aDOT and, though he's completed 80% of his passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions, he's averaging just 5.8 yards per attempt.
An outrageous 30 of Broughton's 66 passing attempts were to a player behind the line of scrimmage.
The other QB — 6-foot-4 Brayden Roggow — also throws the ball at or behind the line of scrimmage an absurd amount of times (just 5-of-66 attempts have been considered deep).
You'll be shocked to find out that strategy has led Akron to the eighth-least efficient offense in the country. Some of that can be chalked up to playing two power-conference foes in Wake Forest and Minnesota, but it's clear Joe Moorhead didn't account for Poffenbarger not playing.
It's tough to gauge where the Zips are at defensively given they've been overmatched twice and have overmatched their third opponent, Robert Morris. But last year's unit was predicated on creating turnovers, and a majority of the players responsible are no longer on the team.
Also, given that turnovers vary year over year, it's not a strategy that lends too much to predictability.
We'll have to wait and see on that side, though regression can certainly be expected.

UNLV vs Akron Pick, Betting Analysis
There’s nothing better than a weird body clock game. This kicks off at noon Eastern at InfoCision Stadium — one of the worst-attended venues in the country — which is the equivalent of 9 a.m. internal for UNLV.
Although there are plenty of direct flights from Las Vegas to Akron, traveling UNLV fans may be scarce, since Akron isn't exactly a destination. (Though, if you know where to look, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the area, but I digress.)
Expect an empty, sleepy environment for the visitors playing early in the morning.
Some examples of Pacific Time teams falling flat for AM kicks include UNLV just last year falling behind 24-10 to Miami (OH) before rallying 17 fourth-quarter points, USC falling to Illinois as a touchdown favorite, and a 2022 Detroit Bowl game where Western Michigan beat Nevada (+6.5) by 30 points.
It doesn’t happen much outside of conference play, and it’s a newer phenomenon, but these games get weird.
There are two buy points here: Akron +14 and anything under 51 points. The total was bet way down from its opening of 53.5 and then back up again from its low-water mark of 49.5.
When it comes to sleepy environments and odd body clock games, I like to look at the first half. Usually, teams adjust pretty quickly to that environment, and players wake up. But the start of games can get weird, and defense is usually the first thing to go.
Don't be convinced Akron's defense is any good, as it's given up plenty of explosives through the air and hasn't been able to get off the field on third down.
Despite flaws in UNLV's offense, both teams run a moderate tempo, and Akron's passing attack isn't one to attack downfield.
Expect UNLV to have several chances with the ball in the first half and hit on some explosives of its own.
The over on the Rebels' first-half team total.
Pick: UNLV 1H Team Total Over 16.5 or Better (-146, FanDuel)
