Utah State Aggies Betting Preview: Hard to Recover
It’s really hard to envision a worse start for a program. Utah State fell to FCS Idaho State by the score of 29-17.
The Aggies opened up 15.5 favorites, and then proceeded to enter the second half down six points. The Bengals then followed up with 13 more points to Utah State’s scoreless fourth quarter.
Expectations weren’t that high for the Aggies in their first year in the Pac-12, but a loss to an FCS program is unacceptable.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall blamed himself for the loss and rightfully voiced concerns about the Aggies' penalties. Last week, they committed 11 penalties for 83 yards.
Quarterback McCae Hillstead posted an embarrassing stat line, completing just 50% of his passes for two touchdowns and three interceptions, while also taking two sacks.
Two of those interceptions occurred in the final four drives of the game, and after his third total pick, Mendenhall put in backup Grady Brosterhous.
Seemingly, the only thing that worked fine was the run game, with Javen Jacobs rushing for 80 yards, and both quarterbacks used their legs to their advantage. But that was it.
Unfortunately for this program, it doesn’t get easier. The next two weeks are against ranked programs, and in four weeks it takes on Boise State.
Washington Huskies Betting Preview: Getting the Hang of Things
It was the first time that the Apple Cup between Washington and Washington State opened up the season.
While the vibes were immaculate and the weather was beautiful, the game was far from it.
Ultimately, the Huskies walked away with a 24-10 victory, with quarterback Demond Williams Jr. being the star of the show. The junior had himself quite a quality day, throwing 24-for-35 and a touchdown, while running for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Williams was the lone touchdown in the first half after a heroic-style run in the second quarter, and then the floodgates opened in the fourth quarter when both teams combined for 24 points.
If this offense showed me anything last week, it’s that it has a lot of work to do, primarily on the ground. Williams cannot continue to be the team's leading rusher. They’ll need to get more out of senior running back Jayden Limar.
Wide receivers Chris Lawson and Rashid Williams did end up waking up and having themselves a nice game in the second half. I would expect to see them continue to be involved.
While the offense seemed slow out of the gate, the defense was the complete opposite. The Huskies forced the Cougs to go 0-11 on third-down conversions and created an immense amount of havoc for QB Caden Pinnick.
There’s a lot to like about the defense, led by senior linebacker Jacob Manu, who has been a tackling machine his whole collegiate career.
Manu ended the game with 11 total tackles and a sack, while safety Alex McLaughlin added in five solo tackles and a TFL.
Utah State vs Washington Pick, Betting Analysis
For a second, it seemed like the Huskies were in trouble.
However, after getting their feet under them against Washington State, they reverted back to the ranked team I was expecting when the season opened.
I don't want to react too strongly to the Utah State debacle, but this is as bad a situation as you can be in. A poor start like that resonates throughout the season.
Washington will be the Aggies' toughest opponent on schedule, and in front of a raucous Seattle crowd, it's hard to envision a worse environment to attempt to get back on track.
Utah State is not a good program right now, and Washington simply outclasses them. If Idaho State can tear up the Aggies, what makes you think the Huskies won't? This is a dominant defensive core, and I anticipate the match getting ugly.
