Panthers vs Eagles Week 6 Preview
With the unfortunate news regarding the health of Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee will step into a poor offensive environment to try and right the ship for a reeling Eagles offense.
Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion was projected by many to make major changes to this offense heading into the season, but that has not come to fruition through five games. Emphasizing more under-center operations in conjunction with the play-action pass would certainly assist in alleviating the issues facing the Eagles' offensive line.
I expect to see both of these concepts at the highest usage rate thus far this season. The Panthers' run defense is vulnerable. Mannion and the offensive coaching staff must establish some kind of identity to prove they can be the more physical team.
That may sound a bit cliché, but the Eagles have a real chance to have success on the ground here.
Carolina ranks last in the NFL in rush yards over expected allowed. Maybe most importantly for Philadelphia, the Panthers rarely hit runners at or behind the line of scrimmage, which has been a major issue for the Eagles on early downs.
Dameon Pierce is the fourth running back on the depth chart in Philly, so expectations should be tempered. However, he has been a starter in the league and he can churn out enough yardage on early downs to help McKee avoid the dreaded three-and-out that has plagued this offense.
DeVonta Smith’s return should pay major dividends here as both Panthers starting cornerbacks are set to miss another game. Smith accounts for nearly 33% of the team’s targets when he is on the field and he is the downfield playmaker needed to flip the field or create scoring opportunities. This will be just the second game this season in which Smith and Dallas Goedert have both been in the lineup.
The Panthers offense has been one of the most surprising stories to open the season, but they still have a lot to prove against the upper echelon of defensive units around the league.
Philly’s defense may not fit into that category at this point, but it has been above average in both generating pressure and stopping the run. With the added motivation of redemption given how each of their last two losses occurred, this game is an opportunity for a season-defining performance in front of the home crowd.
Bryce Young might be under duress more in this contest than in previous games this season as left guard Damien Lewis will be out of the lineup due to injury. Lewis was playing at an elite level to open the year before giving way to his replacement, Corey Bullock. This is a considerable drop-off at a key position for a Panthers offensive line that has dealt with plenty of turmoil themselves.
The potential for the Eagles to create havoc is their path to victory. Young’s passer rating drops from a remarkable 122.8 when operating from a clean pocket to 71.6 when pressured. The Eagles surrender just 4.6 yards per pass attempt when they can generate pressure on the opposing passer.
Panthers vs Eagles Prediction, Betting Analysis
Had the Eagles finished stronger in each of their last two games by holding on to beat the Rams and earning a hard-fought victory over a top AFC team in the Jaguars, how would oddsmakers have priced this line?
Even with Tanner McKee under center, the sentiment would not have been that this is a team deserving of underdog status at Lincoln Financial Field.
We are buying low on an Eagles team that many believe is only a loss or two away from a fire sale and giving up on the season. The Panthers are also priced at their absolute peak considering they are riding higher off an island game victory the entire country witnessed.
Carolina’s last road game saw them put up 18 points, average fewer than five yards per play and convert just 27% of third downs in a loss to the Browns. The Panthers should not be giving up more than a field goal against a desperate Eagles team on the road.
Take the points, but you may not need them — I expect Philly to win outright.
Pick: Eagles +3.5
